Buchans

Ahh-the power of this site! Returned today and had the set menu-Delicious Scottish Smoked Salmon and asparagus followed by tender, crispy scampi-All washed down with at least a bottle of fine Rose and a bill under £40. Buchans is back. (Or maybe it's the better chef that's back).

I really hope that Buchans is not going downhill as I probably eat there more often than anywhere else. However the last 3 times have been very disappointing - dry duck in overbearing sauce, chicken in some quite revolting sauce and tasteless prawns in a repulsive mix of guacamole and cream sauce. To cheer myself up I thought that I couldn't go wrong ordering the steak, which was good admittedly, but at £21 with no vegetables whatsoever?
I'm told that there are 2 main chefs. Perhaps one is better than the other as usually Buchans is great value and provides its customers with imaginative and tasty fare.

We've been living in the area for the past five months but hadn't made it to Buchan's. I assumed it was rather too pricey for us. I'm so glad we made the effort to try it out last night - I had had a huge lunch and so made do with a cider and onion soup and cheese toastie. Really delicious. My partner had rack of lamb, which he loved. The service was great, really friendly, apart from a slightly sour man (but I rather suspect that's just his way).
The back room is a really comfortable, serene place and it's easy to feel v much at home, which is handy as we live just a few metres away.
We'll definitely be back.

I live nearby.
The food here is technically highly competent. The price-if that is important to you-is modest.
The service might be a bit lax.It is more than made up for by the fact that the back dining room is pleasant-the tables are well spaced and the food is made by someone who knows what they are doing. The game pie this week was hot and very tasty.
The monday fixed price is an extraordinary bargain if you don't fancy cooking.
Wine fairly priced.
Frankly a bit of a Battersea star.I went on monday after the gym-I was told the aircon in the restaurant was defective so it was suggested we ate in the bar-this is a restaurant comfortable with a largely local clientele.

We eat at this restaurant often, and although the service can be quite slow and you have to keep catching the waitresses' eye, we absolutely love it. The area has taken off gastromonically with the equally good Butcher & Grill round the corner, but for a local restaurant you can't beat Buchans. The food is always hot and tasty, the menu is varied and aften changes, the wine is reasonably priced and the choice is excellent. There is a bar menu and a a la carte menu with British favourites, and the price is very reasonable. We take business contacts there and sit in the more formal room at the back, take friends to the sitting area in the bar or sit at the bar and eat whilst watch the footie with the friendly locals. It is a place you can go alone if you don't fancy cooking at home as the bar staff really make you feel at home. Thank goodness places like Buchans still exist.

I don't think that the prices are on the high side here-quite the reverse in fact. They have an extensive wine list at affordable prices and the food is absolutely delicious. The haggis, mash and whisky is a personal favourite starter, there is often a delicious fish starter on the set menu and the roasts on Sunday are succulent and plentiful. On S aturday, I had smoked salmon followed by the mixed grill for £11.50. Some people definitely are against this place-Not me though-Definitely a local favourite.

I wish Buchans had stayed well kept secret! We went recently and the whole experience was a disaster. The staff seem to concentrate on the bar area as the service in the restaurant was not what I would call efficient. We had to go searching for the waiter on more than one occasion to bring our wine etc. The starters were pretty unremarkable and lacked finesse. Some of the main courses had to be sent back for reasons varying from not hot enough to meat that was "chuck". Needless to say it didn't really make for such a fun evening. Plus the red was well above the correct temperature almost hot! Good for the ski slopes. To be fair we were not charged for some of the main courses but really all we wanted was a good night out. We should have realised something was up when we arrived as the restaurant was almost empty and it was the weekend! We shall not be returning. Pity!
