I went there on my birthday with 3 female friends. It was absolotely nightmare..! Service was too slow, starters & main course was extremely late. Staff was rather inexperience, particularly the manager as he was much involved in the conversation with the recptionist.Horrible choice..very dissapointing restaurant.

I went meal here last week. Atmosphere was a nice change - very old fashioned and cosy. However, the food was a big let down. Everything was to rich and over seasoned. I love steak but i think it's one of teh few times in my life i couldn't face eating mine - I forced my way through half of it. Came out feeling bloated but not very satisfied.

Service was fine but I will not be going back. You can get much better food for your money else where.

We ate at Rules for the first time last night and it was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best meal that my husband and I have ever eaten. The food was utterly superb. The portions were beautifully judged, perfectly seasoned and presented wonderfully. The atmosphere was excellent, our waitress did a fantastic job with grace and humour and we can't wait to go back. Yes, it was also the most expensive meal that we had ever had, but it is definitely a case of you get what you pay for and neither of us felt in the slightest that we were overpaying; the quality is simply that good.

I took my husband to Rules for his birthday (13th May) just last week and I have to say that I have never felt so let down. The mushroom soup I ordered was far too much - it was thick and had no seasoning whatsoever! My husband had the crab bisque of which he said was non descript and needed alot more seasoning. Then our mains followed - of which mine was sent back twice as having ordered well done lamb and was given a 'bloody' piece of lamb twice was rather annoyed! To top it off all of the vegetable that we ordered arrived cold, not luke warm cold. I barely ate 1 lamb cutlet when the waiter arrived and asked if we would like dessert. I have to say that the food and service was soo bad (well I would go as far to say that the service was not even there) that we asked for the bill without finishing our meals. When the waiter took away my plate I was suprised that he failed to ask whether there had been a problem with the food (having already sent the food back twice) and then failing to eat anything. I also wondered what the bright blue mark on the lamb was when the chef sent the plate back to our table. Definately a place that I will not be recommending or re-visiting.

I hadn't been to Rules for years. We went last night - 3 May. We thought it was better than ever. The atmosphere was excellent. So many restaurants are now bordering on hysterical, with noise, over inflated reputations etc. Rules was full, with a wonderful atmosphere, but still remained calm, very welcming and friendly, and the clientele were upmarket, cheerful, and calm.

The food was excellent - I could eat here every night! I had the Steak and Kidney pudding with oysters, English greens and fried potatoes. My friend had a steak and wine pie. I had Morecambe Bay shrimps to start, my friend the artichoke salad.

The starters were small, but the meal really kicked in with the mains and desserts. My profiteroles were heavenly, and my friends pear tart scrummy. I looked around and didn't see a single dish I wouldn't have wanted - the rib eye beef on the bone with Yorkshire Pud looked fab - but you have to order for 2 for that. The Yorkshire was huge. After 3 courses we were so full - so just as well the starters weren't huge.

My one and only little gripe is that hte last time we got bread and butter - lots of different breads - but this time they appear to have cut back on that.

Despite this, the dining rooms are gorgeous, the staff welcoming and friendly but discrete, and the main courses better than last time. They have really made an effort to improve. The treacle sponge looked to die for!

I fell in love with Rules all over again - we will be back.

We went to Rules last Monday after two years, in our absence Rules has taken a nose dive, the food is not value for money any more, the receptionist made us wait for over ten minutes while having a nice chat with the one who seemed to be the manager on duty totally oblivious to our presence.

The service was diabolical from begining to end, distant and unhappy.

Never again

I went to Rules on Tuesday the 6th of March with some friends who came from Italy and we had the worst dinner ever, from the unfriendly receptionist to the busy talking to each other managers, the waiters tried the best but had little or no knoledge of the food they were serving.

The bill went along with the night, very overpriced, as for the food forget about it.

We left only thinking not to come back again, just a beautiful restaurant taking for a ride for the staff.

I'm not sure how Rules has recieved the bad reviews listed below. I went for my 25th birthday last night and thought it was great! Service was impeccible, the food was quality traditional fare and I liked the atmosphere. If you want something a bit trendy, this isn't the place for you, but if you love great British cooking, proper service and historic surroundings I'd recommenr Rules. And though I feared it may be over-run by tourists, I noted that most of the customers were English, and probably regulars.

Prices aren't cheap, but I think they are good value.
