The Independent

John Walsh - 11/15

Saturday, September 03, 2011 - Her main-course navarin of lamb was another long-cooking classic. Instead of the usual lamb neck, the head chef Matt Christmas dished up tranches of rump and shoulder. The rump was a delicate, virginal, lambkin's-ear pink, sublimely textured, while the shoulder was a tougher, sterner, altogether more grown-up cut; it had clearly been braised for several years in white wine, chicken stock, and rosemary, then finished off with some kind of roux. The pair offered a brilliant contrast, as if you were eating both mother and daughter in the same dish. My risotto nero with sea bass was an amazing sight - the beautiful red-orange fish pertly arrayed on a miniature island of blackened rice, it resembled a fascinator at Ascot.

Monday, October 05, 2009 - A main of Lamb rump, breast, tongue and sweetbread with warm summer bean salad and aubergine was an excellent piece of cooking, the offal working very well with the more routine cuts. Little tip, if you feel full right about now, cancel pudding and just have the cheese. Chez Bruce is famed for its cheese board and it is richly deserved...

Stunning. Lovely atmosphere, impeccable service and faultless food (by which I mean the most beautiful meal I've EVER eaten), flattered further by remarkable value for money, considering the quality. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Everything about Chez Bruce is perfect.

You are welcomed with complimentary tastes - parmesan crackers to whet your appetite, a homemade bread selection still warm from the fresh bake and before dessert, homemade shortbread.

The food is presented beautifully and the tastes of a variety of food combinations compliment perfectly. The wine list is an afternoon read but every glass I have ever drunk has earned its way into the list.

The waiters know exactly when to come whilst allowing you space and time to enjoy your food.

Chez Bruce has been my top restaurant for 10 years. It still remains there as my most wonderful eating experience.

We went to the early sitting for NYE.

Impeccable service. the food was excellent but I wish that I had gone for the creme brule instead of the pineapple carpaccio. I had a bit of the creme brule and it was the best that I had ever had!

It was £65 for three courses which I thought was excellent value.

I had lunch with friends recently at Chez Bruce. Not realising that Wandsworth Common is quite a long ride from N1 we had to call the restaurant to let them know we were running late. Fortunately this wasn’t a problem, even on a busy Saturday.

Lovely venue, very French bistro look and crisp napkins neatly folded. We got a table in the middle of everything giving us the opportunity to experience the great atmosphere. The service was alert and helpful and so was the sommelier. Food wise we were sorted out quite quickly but wine wise it took us longer to decide as the wine list is excessive and we were looking for wines that would match the different dishes. The sommelier was very good here and we ended up with a chateau neuf du pape blanc and a lovely red burgundy Gevrey Chambertin.

For starter I had mackerel tartare with herbs, smoked mackerel, horseradish, apple & cucumber followed by roast cod, grilled squid, baby artichokes, pepper relish and salsa verde. My co-diners had risotto and crab and scallop tortelloni followed by choucroute of pork with cheek blanquette and sea bass with olive oil mash, provençale brochette and gremolata. All dishes were beautiful represented, portioned correctly for lunch and gave us room for cheese later. I often find it very frustrating when I read reviews and people are complaining about size when they only order a main course with a side dish. The entire idea is to have room for 3 courses without feeling hungry or full.

Back to the Mackerel, which was quite bland I am afraid. You would expect the smoked mackerel to give more flavour to the dish but this didn’t happen. Too much apple to my opinion, which was overpowering the fish and cucumber, and too little horseradish leaving out the kick. My co-diners were “yummying” over their starters and I was lucky to taste both of them. I agree, they were yummy! Main courses were flawless, perfectly plated with the right amount of each ingredient. My fish was beautifully cooked, crunchy on the outside, white and moist on the inside, and with a little transparent section in the middle. Perfect! When that is said, I would expect this at a Michelin starred restaurant. Co-diners were also “yummying” over their main courses.

We skipped dessert and went for the cheeseboard instead. The waitress was very generous with us. I think we all managed to get 8 different cheeses laid up on plates and we truly enjoyed it. Of course we had another bottle of wine, a fortified muscat from Australia, to go with all this, it would have been rude not to ;o) Coffee and petit four completed a great lunch.

The restaurant offers 3 courses for £35 for lunch and £45 for dinner. I find this very reasonably priced. We had a lovely day, lovely food and lovely service in a lovely restaurant. I will definitely come back another time and I will try not to be late. Thank you!

Sunday lunch at Chez Bruce with a succulent menu, inimitable service and a treat for my daughter's birthday! The trouble is with Chez Bruce, is that every time one goes the experience is to re-call, and re-visit, over and over again! Perfect portion control, succulent dishes, reasonably priced high order wines and a service from a friendly and professional staff unequalled in London! Bravo

Excellent meal here last night. Wonderfully attentive staff, beautiful food lovingly prepared and served and excellent (if somewhat over-priced) wine. Who could ask for more?

Went for lunch recently and this is my third or fourth review. Never ever disappoints. Every course, service and atmosphere never fails to impress me.

We visited Chez Bruce after living in the area for many years and never quite fancying the restaurant. Having heard very good things from a number of freinds, we were quite disappointed. We felt the selection of dishes wasn't very creative, ranging from things that I wouldn't want to eat there as you can have a dish like that anywhere (butternut squash soup or goats cheese salad) to dishes that you probably wouldn't want to eat, (fried calves brain). We both found our Starters overly salty. The main courses were fairly average as well, my husbands Roast Grouse was well cooked but the whole dish was taken over by the flavour or salty bacon wrapped around the grouse and my chicken main course came out with potato pancakes that were black on the bottom - surely shouldn't have come out of the kitchen. The second attempt was better but when easting my debones chicken pieces, I came across a piece of grissle - fine for some restaurants but for a michelin star level restaurant. The dessert was the best part of the meal for me - a well cooked choclate fondant covered in almonds and amazing ice cream with nuts and my husbands cheese board was also excellent - excellent selection and unlimited crackers as well. Very good. The service was good although they tried to pour wine too often, my husband had all but finished his caraffe before the starter arrived. The head waiter/manager was very good.

My partner and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. A few friends had recommended it and we weren't disappointed.

I was extremely happy with the impeccable service. They really made us feel special. Very attentive but not intruding and extremly friendly.

We were asked if there was anything on the menu we wanted explaing and i asked about a partuclar dish and i was given an in depth cokkery lesson on how the dish was prepared and served!! Fantatsic!! :-) They seem very passionate about their dishes.

We were offered a welcome biscuit which was gorgeous, offered 2 servings of home-made rolls (the foccacia was to die for) and after dessert i was offered a little sweet biscuit along with truffles with my coffee they reflled as many times as you so wish.

I really couldn't manage the cheesboard after 3 courses so i was quite disappointed not to have experienced the huge tray which was larger than the lady serving it!! I will be back!!!!

Tuesday, January 10, 2012 - If I can be quite frank, the meal was ordinary, but this is probably by design. That's not to say that it was bad, far from it, it was a delicious meal, everything was well cooked. But the recipes feel mature, and definitely doesn't come with the flash of younger (hungrier and triendier) restaurants...It's straight up, finger-licking, double portioned French cooking, at reasonable prices, decent service and a charming room. Chez Bruce has aged gracefully into an icon fully deserving its place in the annals of history, but the old guard's definitely still got it.

Friday, November 27, 2009 - 'Mackerel fillet with baby squid, crushed potatoes, chorizo, grape and tarragon' is actually a light seafood salad arriving on the plate in a jumble of colour and texture. The ingredients used are far ranging but they all compliment each other. Similarly, a crisp almost sunburnt looking fishcake arrives in a bowl of creamy leak sauce which is the perfect antidote to the dense fishcake. A soft boiled sits on top jauntily like a little hat. It is a really lovely dish that is both brilliant and comforting. Equally praiseworthy is the duck magret which features thick slices of duck breast scattered with lentils and doused in a light red wine sauce.

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - Evening on a midwinter Thursday, nine o’clock, and the myrtle swathe of Wandsworth Common sags beneath the drizzle. Painted a Ramsayan aubergine, Chez Bruce gleams invitingly over the wet, dark grass. Inside, the mirrored dining room is stirring snugly, like a sleeping puppy. The taxi purrs to the open door. Expectant, excited, hungry, we glide up the glistening stone steps. The room is boxy and hot, the covers packed with claustrophobic eagerness…
