what the critics say

This Is London

Fay Maschler - 4/5

Wednesday, April 17, 2013 - Last Friday my sister Beth and I sat at the right of the dining room, also by the window where, after a spiteful downpour, sunshine suddenly slanted in through the floor-to-ceiling windows illuminating the room - the most beautiful in Europe, it is often said - beyond its chandeliers and looped golden garlands...Our first courses of crab roll with avocado and Charentais melon and slender white asparagus with langoustine and peas were feminine and well dressed, like some of the customers among the fascinating mix of age, gender and type that has always distinguished this singular restaurant.

Sunday, September 07, 2008 - The Ritz grub was impeccable. Marvellous Earl Grey tea; perfect fresh sandwiches; scones with jam and cream; chocolate cake; raspberry rounds; shortbread; fruit in a pastry bowl; gingerbread base with apple jelly on top; mousse; a chocolate macaroon – all stunning. A quality English tea is one of the great meals of all time.

Visited on Time Out special offer (£45 for 3 courses and glass of Champagne) and was thoroughly impressed. Any concerns at stiff and formal staff were soon set aside by everyone we met from the front door, to staff inside, to restaurant service and cloakroom attendants. All were welcoming, relaxed but thoroughly efficient in their jobs. The rooms are of course beautiful and we were very impressed by the choice of food including the vegetarian menu. The rhubarb souffle I ate was one of the best desserts I've ever had. Only note of criticism was the very expensive wine list but I suppose the prices are there for a reason. Unfortunately, I doubt I could afford to eat a la carte but the fixed price menus were excellent.

We purchased an offer for three courses plus a glass of Champagne for £45

The meal started with a few appetisers and bread selection. Then our starters, which were tasty but really no more than a mouthful. I had the sardine which was literally a sardine! The mains were not much bigger but still very nicely cooked and presented. However the dessert was full sized and in fairness it was all very tasty. There were also some jellies and chocolates at the end. I had a small glass of wine which turned out to cost £24 - wow! The Champagne on the menu was priced at £21 so the £45 we paid turned out to be a very good deal.

I would recommend it a place to come for the experience. The room, the waiter service and the piano playing all play a part in this.

Set pre-theatre dinner of £50 is a good choice. Food (three choices) is exquisite though the hot food is not very warm. Service is spot on and the dining room is a sight to behold.

Drink is expensive. £21 for a glass of the Louis Roderer NV. Keep in mind that the wine will be around £10 more expensive than elsewhere. Nevertheless, it is an ideal venue for a celebration.

I made a reservation for the Ritz restaurant over 4 month ago. It was a special occasion for me and boy oh boy what a fantastically brilliant evening it was. I must say the 'valen time' menu was a bargain at £50 (including the tip). All 3 courses were delightful and the service was excellent. Can't wait to go again next 'valen time'!

I took my better half to the Ritz, being American I hoped she would like an old school British gastronomic institution. I was not disappointed. The restaurant looks amazing, the staff were friendly, polite and attentive (not too attentive). The food was quite simply, amazing. My missus had venison in chocolate sauce which was amazing. We're both pretty fussy and I could not fault this place. 5* in every respect.

We went to the Ritz to celebrate my mother's birthday. We went for the 4 courses for £65 menu which was lovely. The service was also fantastic throughout the night and of course the interior of the Ritz is absolutely beautiful.

My only gripe was not being able to take a photo of us on the night in the restaurant or in the foyer - what absolute rubbish! Unfortunately this would stop me going back on a special occasion, but when else would you go to the Ritz??

This is absolutely a place you have to have been to for afternoon tea.

Everything breathes grandeur, the rooms, the furniture, the staff, the guests.

The afternoon tea experience I would call it.

Although there is a dress code, and the ambience is calm and distinguished, I felt at ease.

The food was exquisite, the finger sandwiches, the scones, the cream, the strawberry jam, the pastries, the tea itself; everything was first quality.

I enjoyed this treat very much, and I will surely go back to The Ritz whenever I go to London.

I recently went to the Ritz with my boyfriend for a dinner. The staff were good, but I wasn't impressed with the food as found everything to be quite rich. Definitely not up to the standard of the fine dining I was expecting. Not sure about the prices as well - seriously overpriced for the quality of food served. But the luxurious art deco interior of the place is amazing, though clashing with the quality of food.

I got a last minute table at The Ritz last night and my gosh did I have one amazing night. The room itself is every bit as decadent and charming as you would expect only from The Ritz! However, nothing could prepare me for the quality of cooking and service on offer.

We started off with the asparagus baked in hay, what a treat, the lambs sweetbreads were so sweet and succulent accompaied by what can only be described the best morels I have tasted.

Next the Foie Gras Ballotine which was sheer decadence matched up with lemon verbina which almost took me back to days of childhood.

The main couse was out of this world - Fillet of Beef Rossini! Everything so packed with flavour especially the almost stickey truffle sauce!

The sommelier's wine choices were superb and the service was friendly and fun especially when Luigi flambéed the crepe suzette!

What fun, I will definately be back and would reccomend it to everyone!
