Star of India (Old Brompton Rd)

Having eaten in many Indian restaurants all over the world - I can say that this is one of best. The baked sea bream was stunning - and all the other food was excellent. I ate there twice last week.
The service is amusing. The head waiter seems to model himself on Basil Fawlty - quickly becoming truculent. But he calms down fairly quickly. If you ask for Lassi and they can't be bothered making it they will tell you they are "out of yoghurt".
It is a small and usually blissfully quiet restaurant.

we visited here recently on a thursday night. the place was full downstairs when we arrived and atmosphere was good.
we shared a selection of vegetarian dishes, four in total with two portions of rice and i must say they were probably the nicest vegetarian dishes i have ever had.
service was bit surly but there were no big problems. we shared a large bottle of cobra and the bill came to around £40 would definitely go back at some point

Popped into the Star of India on Tuesday with my wife and it has to be said we had a corking meal. It was about 9:30 so we were worried about getting a table but the staff were very accomadating. We ordered a couple of main curry's with rice, naan and some side dishes washed down with a bottle of the excellent King Cobra beer. It all tasted really fresh and was filling without being stodgy. We didn't wait long for the dishes despite the restaurant being busy. It had a sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere with people obviously having a great time. The meal came to £50 for two without service (they don't add it on automatically which is to be appauded). It is the best Indian meal I have had in a long time and shows you can get an authentic tasty meal outside of Brick Lane without paying the earth. I can't wait to go back soon.

We went to this restaurant by accident one night and could not have been more delighted that we had!! The food was exquisite with a wonderful array of alternative dishes, not just the usual chicken tikka. I would highly recommend this restaurant to all of my friends and we are definately going back for more!

Had been planning to go to this place for years, as my wife and i were huge fans of 'Delhi Belly' and we found Reza very funny!
Made a point to go on my wife's Grad day for an evening meal - and was truly impressed. It was as what we expected Rezss restaurant to be.
Smart, clean, understated and ever so slightly ostentatious!
The food was spectacular and as a biriyani fan - i always use that as a test of a new place i eat at - and here it was wonderful!
The service was laid back - and there was a good level of - leaving the customers alone to eat and enjoy their meal in peace.
Yes, the food took its time to come - but that was also IMHO just right - cos it allowed one to compose oneself, enjoy a drink and await for the delicious meal!
The place is about the size i expected - not too big, but nice and cosy!
All in all very impressed - by the food and the place - and we hope to be back for all other special nights!
NB: The waiting staff were all Bengali (Sylhetis) - they couldnt tell that i understood their language, but twas not a problem - cos they were fine and polite!
And finally - we asked the waiter if Reza would be in - but we were told he was around earlie but not just now - that he often wanders in and out! I am sure they say that to ALL the customers!
:0(
Still. Maybe next time.
Hope it remains the same in terms of atmosphere. service and food - cos it is just right!
Well done Reza!

Excellent food but you pay for it - £30 per head including a few beers. Worth it if you fancy having more than just an average curry though. The service was annoyingly slow though.

The food in this restaurant is well above the average, even for a city of stellar Indian restaurants like London. The thing which impressed me most, however, was that this is the ONLY restaurant I've ever visited in the UK where beverages are served truly COLD (in the American sense of that word), and the customer is cheerfully furnished with as much ice as he wishes. Many kudos to the owners for this lovely touch. My only real disappointment with dining/drinking in the UK is the nearly universal and casual acceptance of drinks which I consider tepid, at best.

I don't make a habit of reviewing restaurants online but felt obliged on this occasion!
The much hype around the Star of India is purely that, hype! The food was well below average, the service was slow (over an hour for our main course) and the waiting staff were rude.
I travel to many countries every year and can honestly say that this is one of my worst restaurant experiences to date.

Wow, how i missed this place. New fabulous decor, clean look, and as always, an amazing atmosphere and great food. It's been a while since I was here last, but I'll be back more often for sure.
I've been informed that new menu is forthcoming, can't wait. This is how an evolved Indian restaurant should be. Fantastic!
