Excellent quality of food but will not be returning to Mildreds because the level of service was absolutely despicable. I have never been to a restaurant where the staff are so rude.

This is a very busy place as a vegetarian restaurant in a central location, but perhaps one of the most unwelcoming restaurants in London. The queue to wait for a table is poorly managed and you have push yourself towards the waiter (who seems too busy to acknowledge anyone) to get your name put down on the list. Even as you wait to order a drink the unpleasantness continues as the bartender ignores the customers and has a perpetual scowl on his face. When you finally sit down, the food and ambience is mediocre. After several visits I have decided not to go back as I have always entered with a smile but left with a frown.

I thought the restaurant was one of the hidden trasures and a delight for people with specific diets like vegetarians, vegan, wheat, diary & gluten free. The food was fab and the atmosphere was just right. I loved the location of this restaurant (close to Carnaby Street). The staff was incredibly friendly and professional. We were 16 of us and had hired the private dining room upstairs. One the 16 starters ordered. The dumplings, the hallomi cheese, the lentils salad and the spinach and kidney beans salad was very good.

For mains I had a risotto pie with pumpkins, spinach and courgettes in mustard cream. It was tasty and flavour some. My colleagues said the vegetarian Sri Lankan spicy curry was very good and the sweet potato fries were a hit. For dessert I had the dark choc and raspberry pudding with a hint of mint. I could, taste and smell each of the 3 very distinct flavours!

I dont drink so my bill for the 3 course meal came to £25 with a glass of coke. My colleagues had ordered wine and they said the wine selection was very good. I would definitely recommend this place and will be going back with my family as my son has special dietary needs and this restaurant is very accommodating.

I decided to visit this place having read such good reviews and due to the fact that often, most non-veggie restaurants I've visited have served boring and bland veggie meals. The menu looked great and myself and my partner ordered with anticipation. What we got was instead very bland, boring (and burnt) food - probably one of the worst meals out I've had in ages. I had the asian veg with tofu and cashew nuts and it tasted of absolutely nothing. It fitted the stereotyped view of vegetarian food just being about tasteless soggy cabbage - that was pretty much what I got. My partner who had the burger of the day also said his was tasteless and we left most of it, later going to another restaurant as we were so hungry. The staff seemed reasonably civil to us, but I heard one of the women being quite rude to another customer, telling her she needed to cram all of her shopping bags by her feet, despite the fact that the restaurant was empty and they wouldn't have got in anyone's way. Maybe they were just having an off-day, as I know other reviews have been good, but I certainly won't be going back to find out.

Another fairly average visit to Mildreds. The service was pretty quick this time but the terrine was pretty uninspiring. Thank god the chips are still great!

Don't go to Mildreds if you want speedy service or a quiet intimate evening for two. But do go if you want an enviable selection of starters, mains, side orders and puddings and enjoy fantastically flavoured food (whether Veggie or not). Prices are exceptionally good for London and the portions served, and the wine list includes a very reasonable organic house white that goes with everything. This is a rare fail safe non chain restaurant in Soho that I cannot rate highly enough. Although aforementioned service is slow it is always charming and always worth the wait.

Enough to turn you...

As a committed carnivore for many years, Mildred's is my guilty secret.. Their mushroom pie is meaty enough for anyone and I defy you to get through the burrito and have room for anything else. They don't apologise for the lack of meat, and don't try and foist a healthy eating agenda.

All in, it's a casual (no bookings, leave your name at the bar and pop next door to the John Snow for a quick beer), convivial place to go with friends for a great meal (oh and it's a vegetarian restaurant) - accept it, when the food is this good, it doesn't matter...

I cannot get enough of Mildreds! Despite the difficulty I always have in finding the place and despite the fact that most evenings you have to wait for a table I just cannot help myself. Favourite dishes tried so far include Artichoke Crostini, the Burger of the Day (not a squashed pea or sweetcorn piece in sight) and Mushroom and Ale Pie. It can be a problem deciding whether to have a starter or pudding (it's tricky to have room for both) but worth taking an accomplice to share so that you can at least try both! Staff are busy but always helpful. Yes you'll have to queue but it will be sooooooo worth the wait. Have tried most Veggie places in London and this outclasses them all with the quality of food and value for money.

The queues out of the door tend to speak for themselves. This is quite simply the best Veggie restauarant in London and has something for everyone. Great wine, funny staff and the yummiest starters, mains and desserts. Portion sizes are generous but not greedy, I'll often have two starters rather than a starter and a main. Olives are a good bowl full rather than the half a dozen that other establishments proffer and the homemade bread and foccia is a meal within itself. Have been over half a dozen times now since being introduced to Mildreds just under a year ago and it never dissappoints.

You’re a mixed bag Mildreds. Whenever i’ve had the mushroom and ale pie, a deep and smoky brown gunk under a perfect pillow of pastry i’ve thought you were wonderful. And with the excellent mushy peas and a half decent beer on the side, you’ve sometimes seemed like the perfect pre-West End, not horribly overpriced, venture.

But when i’ve strayed away from the pie i’ve been severely let down. It was a good job i was concentrating on wooing someone when i was with you a year ago – rather than the hugely underwhelming curry you served up (my memory suggests there was plum involved, but i’m probably wrong). And i remember ordering the kind of pasta once which aimed at subtle flavours, and ended up tasting of nothing.

I think if i stick to THAT pie though, i’ll keep visiting...
