I do hope someone in charge of customer service at Mildred’s is reading these reviews. It is such a shame for a restaurant that serves such tasty, hearty food and that has such a lively atmosphere with loads of potential is so ruined by the staff. They seemed to me to be miserable, smugly ungracious and bordering on rude (if you can get their attention in the first place). I felt as if I’d gone in wearing a t-shirt that said “vegetarian food sucks” and wearing a chicken carcass on my head. It’s actually worth going to Mildred’s purely to cheak the behaviour of the staff out! I began to think that perhaps it was an in-joke and that they were competing with each other to be the most un-smiley and uncommunicative. The icing on the nut roast is that they had the cheek to include a 12.5% service charge on the final bill. Unbelievable. There is no way they deserve a tip with service like that. But like a lamb I paid it, fearing a look from one of the staff if I challenged it really would kill.

My recent experience at Mildred's (25/01/08) is In line with the other reviews. The food is great, the menu imaginative, but the staff really are very sullen. They aren't outright rude, but they only just manage to be civil. Not a single smile from the two female staff for any of the customers there during our hour long visit. It's such a shame that a great restaurant is downgraded into an OK one just by the snippy staff.

We ate at Mildreds on Friday 18th January 2008 and can agree that the staff are not particularly helpful. If the initial 'meeter and grunter' doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth then trying to get served a the bar certaintly will during the hour wait for a table. We did wonder whether the bar was self service at one stage.
Once seated however the waitress who served us was much more pleasant however we did wonder how hounable her intentions were! The food was of a reasonable standard, a good starter but of the 3 main meals 2 of the dishes were cold (and the other burnt) but we understand why as the food is left in a line to be served which is dificult to reach by the staff due to the crowds of people waiting for a table.
Despite our comments which it is hoped is taken as contructive feedback , we would visit again.

Dear Reader, We visited that place again today saturday 05th january 2007.
Again, the food served is very tasty. SHAME about the STAFF working in the front line. All 3 were unfriendly and dry...thats probably why we, dinners get charged the 12.5% service . overall 5 for the food, ZERO for service.(ok 1).

I visited Mildred's for the first time on Friday, 28th December 2007 at about 5.30pm. The food was lovely. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for the staff. They were disinterested, bordering on downright rude, inattentive and bored. The tables were far to close together. If I wanted to sit with strangers when I ate, I would eat on the train. I would not go there again and nor would my dining partner.

Good location, good atmosphere and an animated crowd. Service is excellent and helpful. Food tends towars the bland and unimaginative, and is not terribly accomplished. In our visit we got a perfectly forgettable Malaysian curry, five small and burnt dumplings, and a veggie burguer wich was burnt as well. Adding three drinks and a coule of side dishes, the meal for 3 came up to some 50 quid, and on top of that the now customary "optional" 12.5 charge, and on top of that an extra pond for a homeless charity. Very poor value for money indeed.

We went top Mildreds early on a Saturday night because we knew there was a no booking policy and we got a seat straight away. Food was fantastic and came quickly. Nice place, unpretentious and friendly.
There was a blond woman working there who was extremely helpful and a bloke who wasn't.
There was no upstairs loo for disabled persons (us). There was no hand rail down the first set of stairs. There was no clear signage as to where to go. And it was unsettling that the bloke didn't seem to care .... in the slightest. Is the restaurant aware that under the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act it is breaking the law?
It would be sad if the place had to close and we wouldn't have felt it necessary to write this review if the bloke we'd asked about the lavatories had shown the least concern, helpfulness or consideration.

We went to Mildreds last Saturday night. We had a sizeable wait for our table (40 mins) but that is a given in central london on a Saturday night. It is not a comfortable waiting experience however: there are no seats and you feel very much in the way.
Once this was over, the eating experience was not worth the 40 minute wait in my opinion. Tables are small, seats uncomfortable, service bad!We had to always gesture over the waitress/waiter - they never checked how we were. We had to put our plates on another table (it was empty, before you wonder!) to signify we had finished otherwise we would have been there all night.
The waitress brought our starters and chose the most random ingredient to identify them by; when we showed some confusion she charged off without trying to explain what the dishes were. When she came back near our table to serve someone else we got a chance to ask her if they were the particular items we had ordered. Turned out they were, so she went to get them back from the kitchen - so we had starters that had been sitting on the side for however long while we tried to get the waitress' attention.
I ordered the butterbean, sweet potato and pepper cinnamon spiced stew served with cornbread - when it came it was a pile of tomato sauce with some other ingredients so I would definitely not recommend it, particularly as I cannot eat food that is overly tomato based. If they had been mentioned as the main ingredient on the menu I would not have ordered it.
The staff just weren't very friendly or welcoming, nor was the restaurant as a whole. For what it was it was an expensive meal, and not enjoyable

Wow, went to mildreds yet again, the menu just keeps on getting better each time I eat there. My friend and I had the beetroot salad and gyoza dumplings as a starter for mains we had the ratatouille with polenta mash, and cinnamon spiced stew with corn bread both our starters and mains were amazing...
We ate at mildreds on a Friday night and as it was very busy we had to wait for 40min, the service wasn't the best, but the food arrived quite quickly and was amazing. Having said this when we have previously dined at mildreds during the week the staff have been more relaxed and hospitable towards us. It’s a shame people feel the need to write such horrible reviews on this site about their dining experience as I have seen for myself whilst dining at mildreds and at many other restaurants how rude and demanding some customers can be....
Highly recommend checking mildreds out preferably during the week when you can have more space to dine in and enjoy the experience...

I've been going to Mildreds for the past 6 years but last Friday I have to say my love affair was well and truly over with the place.
I think they have the rudest, most unhelpful staff in London, the food is ok not great and the only reason to go is that someone hasn't opened an alternative.
Don't believe the hype!
