Mildred's

As a confirmed meat eater I don't often venture into vegetarian eateries, but I will definitely be going back to Mildred's for the food if not the service.
First time visitors should note that they don't take bookings; won't seat you until your whole party's turned up and do not accept credit card payments, only cash and debit cards.
The restaurant was very busy during my visit and extremely noisy. It is not a place for a quiet meal and we had to talk quite loudly to be heard above the noise.
Our meals turned up fairly quickly but some of the staff were abrupt and not particularly helpful. That being said the food was good and I had what is possibly my tastiest burgers ever - it definately gave most of the meat varieties a run for their money. My burger was accompanied by some fantastic sweet potato chips and a wonderful dip. The desserts were also quite good - my steamed ginger pudding came with some wonderful tasting custard.
Mildred's is definitely worth a visit, go solely for the food and you shouldn't be dissapointed.

Not being a vegetarian I was a bit miffed when it was set as the venue for my friends and I to meet up.
When we all got there we were shown upstairs to the private dining room which has a very interesting array of photos on the walls. That was just the start of what turned into a very impressive evening. True the staff werent as helpful as other places but i found this to be quite a relief after far too many restaurants asking how things are every 2 minutes. The food was so well cooked that I have found myself craving to return - mostly for the Mushroom and ale pie which has more flavour than most of the meat variations I have had.
I would reccomend Mildreds to anyone as a great place to eat be them Vegetarian or not.

I would have to agree that the service lets Mildreds down but the food and ambience more than makes up for it. The lady took it very well when a waiter spilt a whole glass of champange over her - it was hilarious! Great for vegetarians - great choice of meals which makes a nice change from the usual uninspiring dishes at other restuaurants.

I had heard about Mildred's from my partner who said 'it was the place to be for vegan / vegetarian food back in the 1990's' So being recently converted to vegetarianism me and my better half though we'd give it a go. From the outside Mildred's looks like a very small sitting room of a restaurant but as you walk through the door it extends way back with plenty of bright natural light and ample tables. We went on a Saturday lunchtime and the place was packed.
The service was mixed (some helpful, some not) We were eventually served by an extremely helpful red cheeked Kate Winslet lookalike waitress who was able to help out with regards to certain ingrediants on the menu.
The menu itself was very comprehensive and easy to follow, the portions of good size, however, a little slow on delivery (we had to wait for about 30 minutes for our food) and again the price was a bit expensive. As for the atmosphere, well the restaurant was completely packed from the moment we arived to the moment we left. So overall not what I expected, but as in life nothing ventured nothing gained and all that. It wasn't excellent by any means but well worth a look.

Fantastic food - try the mushroom and ale pie. Nice wines - good value too. The atmosphere was bright and lively, busy, buzzy - very pleasant. The service - we saw nothing to complain about. ever since our visit, we've been recommending Mildred's to friends and we'll certainly be back.

My friend and I visited Mildred's for the first time since we posted a review on 13 March 2006.
I ordered the mushroom and ale pie again since it was so gorgeous last time but was disappointed. Perhaps the recipe has changed because the mushroom filling had none of the oomph it had last time. It was bland. The fries were floury and undercooked but the mushy peas were fine.
I had the mango sorbet which was gorgeous. I really love a good sorbet and this had a wonderful texture and rich colour and had plenty of oomph.
The staff were far more outgoing and friendly than last time so perhaps some of the comments about attitude have struck home. All very attentive and friendly without fuss.

The food is nice, but the service is absolutely terrible! I've been a few times and the service is consistently bad, so I won't be going back.
Come on Mildred's, sort yourslevs out and start being nice to the customers!!!

I LOVE THIS PLACE!
The menu is huge and diverse and the portions are hearty and tasty (my strictly carnivorous boyfriend came out with an expression I never thought would pass his lips: "mmm, try this spinach, it's delicious!").
The atmosphere is unpretentious, homey and relaxed.
It is usually pretty busy whenever I go, and I'm never actually disappointed by the service - however, there is one really sulky-faced waitress , who puts a bit of a dampener on the otherwise faultless experience.

I've eaten at Mildreds before and was impressed with the food but the service is awful. Recently popped in to see if a table was available and was ignored by not one but two members of staff. Finally had to grab someone out of the kitchen who sulkily informed me nothing was free. By then though had decided couldn't face the place as it had made me so angry. Sort the meet and greet asap!!!
