agree with the review, especially about the service which was stunningly bad. our nasty waiter not only ruined our experience but lost the plot and brought our food luke warm. sadly we won't be going back

We went along to Mildred's tonight, to celebrate our 14th anniversary. After meeting under the Eros statue at six in Piccadilly, how romantic, we strolled the quick 5 minutes to the restaurant and were met by a warm and welcoming waiter.
After being shown to our table and given enough time to decide but not left to wait (such a choice of such lovely food), our waiter returned and took our order in a pleasant manner. Our bottle of wine was delicious as an aperitif, and then the starters came. Oh My Gosh. The grilled artichoke hearts with lemon aioli,, crostini and salad were superb. The gyoza dumplings were excellent.
Mains didn't disappoint either, she had mushroom, porcini and ale pie with chips and minty mushy peas, i had baby aubergine, chick pea and olive tagine with cous cous, flat bread and harissa sauce. ange finished her plate, i was so stuffed i couldn't finish mine, but the flavours were marvellous, we did lots of food sharing tonight.
We had two coffees to finish and i thought this was one of the nicest and most enjoyable restaurants that I've ever eaten in. Good food, friendly people, chilled atmosphere, and just a damned good evening out. Thanks to all at Mildred's.

Great food, great service! I went last weekend with a friend - it was busy but we only waited 10 mins for a table. The food was absolutely declicious - I ordered the burrito - this was a big meal and completely stuffed me and my friend ordered the special which was mushrooms with smoked tofu. We also had a tap water and a lemonade. It worked out being around a tenner each - I think this is reasonable considering the location.
The service was also faultless - very friendly and efficient.
Everything on the menu looks great and I look forward to returning.

The historic consensus seems to be - great food, dodgy service. So, I took some work reading to do while eating dinner. First, there was no single diner-itis. I was given a good table and as attentive service as everyone else. Second, there were service problems in the sense that the place looked understaffed which produced a strange combination of bursts of activity and inattentiveness. Service was not subtle. However, it was effective in that I was served reasonably speedily and my work reading wasn't intruded on by someone trying to land a plate on my photocopies.
An artichoke starter was okay but did not need a strange mayonnaise gloop. The tajine main course contained some flavour free cous-cous counteracted by a pleasant vegetable stew with plenty of flavour. However, the use of a nut in the stew created an interesting texture issue. The white chocolate cheesecake was special although it might have benefited from a larger amount of cream or better some natural yoghurt. Nevertheless, it was one of those dishes that sticks in the memory.
Overall, the bill for three courses and a smoothy at just shy of £30 seemed a bit steep although it was in Soho. That, though, meant a stuffy over-crowded room and a strange lack of atmosphere.

After reading the reviews, I was prepared for a tasty and enjoyable dinner served by ogres. Fortunately the restaurant seems to have locked the unfriendly staff up in the basement, because we received a warm welcome, and fantastic service from both the bar staff and our server.
The atmosphere at this restaurant was great, and only improved by the incredibly unique photography that hangs on the walls in the room upstairs, and the anecdotes provided by our server about it.
And for the food...The starters were delicious. We had the Holloumi cheese, the gyoza dumplings, artichokes, and hoummous. There was a bit of debate on the ranking of deliciousness, however consensus was found in saying that they were all exceptional.
The mains were ordinary. Nothing worth salivating over. The curry was quite nice, but the risotto cake was a little bland.
The dessert made up for what was lacking in the main. I had the white chocolate and pistachio cheesecake which was absolutely divine. The sticky toffee pudding was also sampled and equally enjoyed.
I am a fan, and I will certainly be back. Perhaps I will stick to the starters and the desserts.

I had been planning on going to Mildreds for some time and was not disappointed. Knowing you couldn't book and being popular, we went on a Monday afternoon for my birthday, so it was pretty quiet and we got a table straight away.
It was nice to sit under the skylight on a bright day. The decor is simple & somehow retro but modern & funky at the same time. The music/atmosphere was slightly too quiet but we did go at probably the quietest time of the day & week.
The menu had quite an extensive array of choices - more than many other vegetarian restuarants.
The halloumi and spinach starter was delicious with the dressing it came with, nicely cooked too. My (non-vegetarian) partner, had a noodle & tempura special & liked that too.
For mains, I had the Ethiopian stew which was very tasty and unusual. Though I'd call it more of a curry than a stew. Slightly spicier than expected but medium was fine for me. It helped that it came with a small ramekin of cottage cheese to cool it down! I liked the quinoa which was a refreshing change to rice or cous cous. My partner loved the 'meaty' mushroom pie & was very complimentary of the mushy peas, saying they were the best he'd ever had! The chips were big wedge style rather than the put down description of 'fries' on the menu.
Dessert was my least favourite out of the three courses. I was hoping the banana tofu cheesecake would have more bananas and maple syrup in it as the menu said. Shame it didn't have a non-vegan option of this, although I must add that there was a different cheesecake on the menu that was.
Service was friendly and came with a smile but my only criticism would be that we were never asked how our food was at any stage, even though there were only about five other people in the whole restaurant. Efficient but not attentive enough.
I would definitely go again to try the other dishes.

The waiting staff at Mildred's are so rude you'll wonder what you did to offend them in a past life. The music is played loud and would be more appropriate in a nightclub (they even played some warped techno - whatever you think about it, it's not dinner music). And the whole vibe of the place is "what the hell is a customer doing in my restaurant?"
I know there's a limited amount of vegetarian restaurants in London, but Mildred's feels little like eating a meal in a surly teenager's bedroom.
If you are going in a group you may be able to overlook this and enjoy the food (you can't fault the kitchen - my dinner was good), but - honestly - if you're going with your partner or a friend, go somewhere else.

Three of us went to Mildred's for dinner on a Saturday night. We arrived at 7pm and noticed there was a queue. We thought the restaurant's popularity was a good sign both in terms of customer satisfaction and turnover of fresh food. We ended up waiting for an hour however, although we were estimated a wait time of an hour by the Manager.
While the food was above average for vegetarian fare, I was disappointed at the slightly surly service and the fact that we were not offered any complimentary drinks while we waited patiently for our table, more so after a big bowl of cream was spilled at our feet, splashing my friend's shoes and husband's coat.
Finally, when we left after our meal, we did not receive a thank you, a smile, or anything to entice us to bring our custom back. Mildred's may be popular but the staff should realise that sometimes it's the little things that count, that help to retain new custom.
