The Independent

Terry Durack - 16/20

Sunday, May 24, 2009 - A little starter sings of springtime, as a delicate, clear tomato essence is poured over baby vegetables... Pan-fried sea scallops served with soft potato gnocchi and a whisper-thin layer of octopus form a harmonious balance of sweet and soft; each flavour singular and clear. In the current context, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay probably sits closest to the two-star-and-rising Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester. There are restaurants more ground-breaking (Fat Duck), more personal (Hibiscus), and more exciting (Texture), but you come here for crafty, harmonious cooking with full make-up and not a hair out of place.

Saturday, September 21, 2002 - We ordered the menu prestige and various drinks from assorted members of the splendid, shimmering staff. I fiddled with my knife until it hit an empty glass and went: "Clonggggg!" and Roger's first mouthful of fizzy water went down the wrong way. He tried to pretend he wasn't choking a couple of times and then coughed loudly and wiped the fizz that trickled from his nose.

My wife and I dined at restaurant Gordon Ramsay last thursday and had extremely high expectations going in, as there is a lot of hype about this restaurant. Thankfully the food and the service not only met our expectations but far exceeded them, the only thing that could be considered a let down was the atmosphere, it was very quiet in the dining room at the start of the evening but things soon livened up and we enjoyed a wonderful evening. We both had the Seasonal Inspiration menu which consisted of 5 courses. Each dish was amazing, after our amuse bouche of tomato consomme with fresh vegetables, we had an aubergine dish with very tasty black pudding, covered in a salad of apple, onion, tomato and almond. ( Very nice) This was followed by the most tender lobster tail that had Lardo di collonata on it, this was a first for both of us but the pork and the lobster melted in our mouths.( Wonderful) Our main course was a perfect example of Roasted Grouse with all the necessary accompaniments, game chips, bread sauce, grouse jus, parsnip puree and a cabbage and foie gras parcel. (Outstanding) On to desserts now, the first mini dessert was a modern take on the Peach Melba, this one you must taste to believe, the basil sauce that the waiter poured over the melba was a great touch and balanced the dish nicely, our last course was a superb cherry souffle that both of us loved. Overall the food was outstanding and the service very friendly and efficient, and although we spent a lot of money we both felt that the experience was worth it. we definitely recommend trying this restaurant at least once, and know that we will be back to try the different menus on offer.

We have always been a fan of Ramsay restaurants as compared to many other 2-3 star restaurants, we've always loved the food and service and had never ever had reason to complain. Last night, we finally had the chance to eat at GR's Hospital Road establishment. And we think it tops them all and we love love love everything about the evening.

We ordered the Menu Prestige which is 7 courses plus amuse bouche. The menu was very well put together, very tasty and every dish looked great. We had melt in your mouth pressed fois gras to hot toasted brioche to start. A fresh ravioli very well stuffed with lobster and crayfish swimming in a lobster bisque. Turbot in a shellfish reduction so tender and juicy it may well still be alive. Full gamey flavoured Brest pigeon breast perfectly roasted and accompanied by a piece of kick-ass super smoky, salty pork belly. A fantastic cheese trolley. Followed by a strawberry champagne liquid dessert topped with vanilla cream (this was like drinking a dream cloud). And a to die for chocolate moussy dessert.

We rave about the delightful food but we'd also like to point out the wonderful service provided by the staff. The staff were very friedly, helpful, made us feel very welcomed and looked after us well. The service plays a big part in an evening's enjoyment and we give them top marks too.

Now the cost. It was very expensive (but we think its worth every penny as long as you expect it). Dinner for 2 excluding any alcohol came to over £150 per head. I think the London-eating site should update the cost information on this restaurant's page as the current price shown won't even cover 3 course (food alone).

Loved Gordon Ramsay at Royal Hospital Road. Would truthfully recommend it to everyone who love great restaurant experiences or are looking for a really lovely place to be treated for a special occassion. We can't wait to go back!

Monday, December 15, 2008 - The cooking was fairly flawless, the presentation was good and the dishes left a pleasant taste on the tongue. There were a few moments that the tuck tried tugging at my attention too - the cornetto amuse, the roasted chestnut, the icy, clear Turkish delight - but these were too few, too far apart and too featherweight. I found it all simply superficial.

Monday, September 08, 2008 - Gordon Ramsay once said that his Royal Hospital Road is his pride and joy, if all goes bottoms up then he always has that baby. Only open Monday to Friday its also the hardest place to get a table, and at up to £120 a meal for just lunch, the costliest of his restaurants. To secure a coveted table one needs to ring exactly one month in advance, and to secure the table give them your credit card details...
