I think the only folks who deem this place good value are London Russians (when they aren't poisoning us and each other). The rest of us who work for a living would probably be put off by the really average food, and truly staggering prices (yes, we're talking over 150 pounds for two w/ wine)...and yes, they do beat you up about using the special offers. So why do they offer them?

Other than that, it's worth visiting to see what restaurants used to look like in the late 1960s/early 1970s. And what the food was like. Charming.

Having read a real mixture of reviews for this restaurant, I was a little apprehensive when going there last Friday. I need not have worried! I have a "new favourite restaurant". The food was well cooked, well presented and served in generous portions - enough to satisfy the three strapping chaps that were also at my table. The wine was excellent, and the charming and enthusiastic Patrick was a real treasure and very helpful in choosing the right wines to enhance all of the starters.

He really knows his stuff - hence, I suppose, the fact that his non-pretentious and stubbornly resistant to change (if it ain't broke..... don't fix it!) restaurant is a comfortable, snug, escape from the aluminum tube chairs and arty farty restaurants to be found all over London (don't get me wrong - I love those too (!!) but its so nice to find somewhere which is relaxing and a place where you feel you can "bed in" for the evening and have a wonderful feeling with friends. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Having harped on about the atmosphere, I should probably elaborate on the food. Of the five of us at the table, we pretty much all ordered different dishes - all of which were excellent. My husband particularly enjoyed his snail and mushroom pie - an odd dish but it apparently was so good, I didnt get to taste it!

I'd highly recommend this restaurant to anyone for a comfortable, relaxed evening.

Interesting to see what Jenni (below) says about this restaurant. I had a very similar experience last week - possibly the worst meal I have had the misfortune to suffer in London.

My family and I were using a national newspaper's Bordeux wine offer - a three course meal for £20. The atmosphere when entering the restaurant is pleasant, and the waiting staff attentive. The problems start with the food however - a tasteless pate, a borscht which appears to be nothing more than liquified beetroot (stock appears to be absent) and a passable chicken satay. For mains a pleasant (if small) prawn satay, a below bog-standard chili-con-carne, and a laughably poor salmon with glutonous green gloop (sorrell?). Puddings are even worse - tasteless home made ice cream and a treacle-tart with pastry of which Mr Kipling would be ashamed.

The low-point of the evening had to be the bill however. In addition to paying to suffer the food we had eaten we were given a cover charge (of nearly 15%). After much wrangling (during which we pointed out that the deal being used explicitly stated that cover-charge was included in the price) the owner agreed to remove the additional charge, not without some rather 'anglo-saxon' language.

It is described below by some as an 'institution'. Having visited it all I can say is that the food is, at best, 'institutional' (!)

Beyond the good atmosphere, there is not much to say in favour of this restaurant. I thought the food was poor and the prices were outrageous (e.g. nearly £20 for a very average steak and kidney pie; dinner for two with wine came to c. £130). I would recommend that anyone considering going here would be better off walking up to the Street instead - same concept, better food and half the price.

Once tried never forgotten. It is different and so will not appeal to all, but The food is well prepared, presented and delicious and the service is unobtrusive. Certainly a keeper for me.

Personally I agree with the lawyer this restaurant is great- simple and effective. Patrick is a great host, certainly NOT showy or show off, I have been many times mostly on business and have always enjoyed it. Lovely genuine eclectic interior, with nice people that are relaxed and easy going, the service is fine its just relaxed. Food is also eclectic in mix but well prepared and presented, an institution rather than a revolution and thats part of what makes it great.

I love Pomeganates, and thoroughly agree with James C that it is everything a restaurant ought to be - the atmosphere is quietly welcoming, the decoration charming ,the service efficient and not intrusive. And delicious food. Tables are well spaced. But don't tell everyone. Jane D.

I attended a birthday party at this restaurant, and found it to be pretty disappointing for the money. The King Prawn main course was just warm and consisted of 3 prawns, a few noodles and some beansprouts. The dessert selection was disappointing, and the bill was high. There are much better value restaurants out there. Service was good, shame they didnt have much to serve!
