This Is London

David Sexton - 3/5

Tuesday, April 14, 2009 - The food is pretty good, though not the main point. From the starters recently, ranging from £3.25 for soup up to £7 for smoked halibut, a big baked king scallop (£6.75), on the shell, with chopped bayonne ham and lots of crunchy and very garlicky breadcrumbs, was delicious and disappeared in a flash… And it serves as a fine foil to the real focus — the great wine list. Andrew Edmunds offers really good value, mostly French wine at all levels. There aren’t many by the glass, because that would really be a waste, when the bottles appeal so much.

Highly recommended - especially if you want somewhere romantic! Great food and wine list – it has never failed to deliver the perfect evening and atmosphere.

Second time to the restaurant and was as good as I remember. Food and wine was excellent. Shame there was a double sitting and we had to leave, will teach me to book earlier in the future!

We have visited here several times. The food is excellent but the surliness of the waiter puts us off. He seems to think he is doing us a favour and throws the plates down. He really shouldnt be in the public service industry. It is a shame as this is the only downside to what otherwise is an excellent restaurant.

Again, Andrew Edmunds comes up with the goods.

Goose rillettes - perfect. Daube of beef - perfect. smoked eel - sublime. Hake filet - perfect.

The atmosphere is intimate but bubbly, main course took a while to arrive but waiting staff were nonetheless attentive and the wine list imaginative. A good bottle of Crozes Hermitage at £28 rounded off a great dining experience.

A slightly strange choice of aperatif (cinzano anyone?!), but this is the only - very minor - criticism of a restaurant that hasn't crumbled under its own hype.

I will return...again and again.

We just went this evening to the restaurant with my girlfriend. Being french, I apologize in advance for the mistakes of language. The card was handwritten and not so easy to read, moreover there were not many choices displayed. We found the food very simple, and even if the meat was well cooked, so were the vegetables, the style of the food is still not very refined. For the mood, it was quite romantic at the beginning then there were too many people in the same room which was a mood-killer. The service was nice, but the waitress was overwhelmed with the demands of the customers. There is however a very wide selection of wine available, even if they are quite expensive (as everywhere in London one could answer). The evening was nice but under our expectations : not enough choice, not very refined.

Went this Bank Holiday Sunday. Gorgeous evening and we arrived in a post-pre-dinner drink glow. We were seated upstairs (which seems to be the way to go judging by other reviews). It was just the two us and we had a great time. Very relaxed and fun. My experience of the people serving us was that they were charming and nothing was too much trouble (a request for a variation on the menu was granted without demur). Good wine, good food and good value. What more could you ask for? Try it.

Monday, March 29, 2010 - Finally, my turn: Pork Belly, apple puree, mash. A herculean plate of food. Chunks of sliced pork belly glistened under the spotlights, it looked so good, I was struggling to refrain myself from poking a finger as I took pictures. Hearty and homey aromas steaming quite visibly from the meat. Oh gosh, what regal texture. The juices go everywhere as I bit into it, so hearty and so beautifully roasted. The mash was equally so, buttery. The best bits though were the apple puree and a large slab of crunchy crackling which they had left to one side on the dish.
