They serve decent sushi. Believe me, I'm a Japanese...
I guess Mitsukoshi sacrifice its option in order to maintain the standard of fish or any other ingredients.
Ok, the decor isn't swanky - it's more like bland hotel reception you'd expect to see on package holidays, and yes, they play same classic CD over and over again, but that's the Japanese modernity for you. lol
The main problem I have with majority of so-called Japanese restaurants in London is the consistency of rice. If the rice is cooked in exactly the same manner as it would be in Japan, it's guaranteed to be undercooked due to the hardness of the water in the UK and I don't think it's worth spending money if the restaurant can't get even the most fundamental element of Japanese taste. I'm fed up with undercooked rice - tastes like rubber - that often served in Japanese restaurants in London; annoyingly they can get away with it because no-one really knows how it should tastes like...!
Mitsukoshi seems to be aware of this problem and their sushi tested just like you'd expect in any decent sushi restaurant in Japan, if not good one.
I had Special Nigiri Sushi - £23.00 and Tempura assort - £12.00, and were all tasted like genuine Japanese food.
If you want romantic atmosphere, book a private room like Tom Friday Feb 17 2006 did.

A group of 4 of us were visting London and chose to eat at Mitsukoshi as we'd heard they had great sushi. We had a horrible experience.
As another reviewer mentioned, the decor is very dated and poor. The restaurant is in the basement under a department store and completely lacks any style or visual interest.
We arrived at 9:00 PM on a Friday night, there were maybe two other partied dining, and we were promptly told the kitchen was closing in 30 minutes. We opened our menus to find a very limited selection of sushi, high prices, and nothing but the most basic sushi roll options.
I am forgetting now, but I believe our servers made 3 or 4 mistakes that evening. This included bringing us a piece of toro NIGRI when we had asked for, and pointed to, the toro ROLL on the menu. Perhaps an understandable mistake, but it was one they couldn't/wouldn't correct because their kitchen had close only 10 minutes earlier. We also had to ask for wasabi 3 times before it finally arrived.
The sushi was fresh and tasted just fine. But no way would I ever ever go back - not worth the price, the horrid service, the lack of variety, or the poor decor.
Oh yeah - they also played the same song the entire time we were there, over and over and over...

Food: If you are a sushi lover, this place will turn you into a sushi hater. They have the most boring, smallest menu of any sushi place I have ever seen. The roles are so all of them taste like rice and wasabi. Can't even taste the fish. Some nigiri was fresh but most wasn't.
Service: Probably the worst service of my entire life. We had four waiters and a manager come to confirm what we ordered and after all that at least half of our food never arrived! They gave us blank looks, went to the kitchen to check on the items that never came back and decided that the kitchen was closed for the night. In addition, we had to physically flag the servers down so they would pay any attention to us. We left the restaurant frustrated beyond belief, hungry (as most of our food never came), and having wasted 2 hours of our time. I say wasted because even though it took so many people "trying" to serve on us, it took FOREVER.
Atmosphere: The restaurant is in a basement, so it is musty and a little smelly. We should have turned away when we saw "department store" sign on their door. There was almost no people in there. That should have been our other sign.
Value for money: The restaurant is absolutely not worth the expensive prices they have for their sushi. The pieces are microscopic so all you can taste is rice and wasabi. The nigiri is also very small and you only get one piece. Overall, I wish we never went there. It was way too expensive for the most disappointing food experience all of us have had. I have NO idea how people ranked this place anything other than a 1.

Went here last night for my 5th anniversary with my girlfriend. Splendid.
I booked the Sakora room as a surprise for her which went down very well. Its a little private room which you have to take your shoes off for and you sit at a Japanese sunken table. Very nice.
We pre ordered the Kaiseki for £38 pp. And not long after our Saki came our first course arrived without even having to ask. The little Japanese girl who served us all night was very polite, plenty of "Dou itashimashite".
The service was good as was the food. All in all a very good restaurant that i would have no problem returning to.
