eh. so-so. very average. nice people but awful service. took an hour for an order to be taken, then the apps and main ourses came out all at once, with a few dishes/soups missing inbetween. very unimpressive. the sushi was ok. but for the $$$ i'd expect way better. not impressive at all - i.e. don't go for a business lunch.

There is a consensus that some of the best, classic Japanese cooking can be found at this City restaurant. Bypassing the ground floor teppan-yaki grills, which have a self-limiting quality in terms of subtlety or discovery, go downstairs to the wood-panelled main restaurant. The price quoted above is somewhat notional, as set-price dinners alone range from £29 to £75 (with a lunchtime bento box available at £28). They have the advantage of providing a balance and harmony that you may not obtain by ordering ? la carte; however, staff are helpful.
The traditional virtues of Japanese food - freshness, refinement, modesty, allusiveness, artistry in presentation - are all in evidence and the sushi and sashimi are irreproachable. The menu changes according to season and there are always dishes of the day worth enquiring about.

Getting a booking here is somewhat of a task, asking to be called with cancellations or available times you'll be met with a a mumble and the phone slamming in your ear! Certainly not reliable for business lunches, and very very rude.

Seven of us ate heartily downstairs for £150, including beer and sake. They now serve dishes Izakaya-style, with prices starting from £1.50. I thought it was good value.
The dishes from the varied and imaginative menu are beautifully presented and well-prepared. The unagi donburi is the best I've ever had; even better than that at Defune. Grilled quail's eggs anyone?
The decor is stylish and it's good to see kimono-clad waitress for once. The service was attentive, polite and smiling, although some dishes took a while to arrive.
I left feeling I'd received 95% of what you get at Defune for 30% of the price. Highly recommended.

Not your typical venue for a Valentine's meal, but this is where my boyfriend took me as I was quite insistent that we would not go anywhere with a set "Valentine's" menu, tacky candles & red rose in the centre of each table laid for two, and a choice of whether you'd like the first or second "seating". You get the picture. So this was the perfect alternative. You take your seat in front of the chef and share the area with 7 others, eight seats in total. The chef then proceeds to cook everything you ordered right there in front of you - a unique experience! And my was the food good! My favourite was the steak and garlic. Overall, the food was exquisite, service discreet, prices hefty! I'm not sure if I would go again or not as the price was just so off-putting, maybe for a very special occassion... or if I won the Lotto. Bill came to about £170 for two, with one bottle of wine, two glasses of champers. Portions were small, we were not stuffed, but pleasantly full, although there was definitely room for more. Recommended if you can afford it!

It's a great teppan place, however, downstairs looks a bit shabby these days.
The teppan food is very good. Yes portions are small but that is the nature of the food. The price is scary so I agree with other comments that a corporate card is the best way of paying for it.
The service is exemplary and actually as an experience it is great. Shame that it can be spoiled with some unsavoury clientele who share your teppan and chef.
Overall, I think the food is top notch. The venue is ok and the price OTT.

Food and service was good, although the portions for the price paid was probably not the best of value. I'd recommend the place if you had the corporate credit card or an unlimited budget, but for a quiet night out, it's a little pricy.
