I've always had great food at a reasonable price at Carluccios. Is this reviewer a smoker or curry addict?

We ate at the St Christopher's Place branch and were astonished at the blandness of the food. Allegedly it is authentic Italian cuisine using just good quality basic ingredients. For that read uninspired and complacent. Having a table outside was pleasant but the food was nowhere. People have raved about this place to me but I think are just caught up in the word-of-mouth and afraid to actually put their hand up and say 'it's not that good at all'. Emperor's new clothes?

Just so dull and so average. Given the success of these places you expect to be at least shown a glimpse of excellence. As it turned out we were rudely dealt with in the queue and then served a selection of well below par apologies for Italian cuisine which took far too long to arrive. An overwhelming hostility of salesmanship prevailed throughout the lunch followed by a curious angling for a tip by our waitress despite the mediocrity. Stick to cecconi's.

My wife and I dined at Carluccio's Caffe Smithfield for the very first time, and we were very pleasantly suprised. Excellent Italian pasta. Service was friendly and efficient. We highly recommend Carluccio's.

We had a very good lunch here and not too expensive - two and a half courses plus very nice wine for £25. I had a delicious rich lamb stew, cheese, and chocolate pudding that was perfect. The service was very friendly, timed well and reasonably efficient. Good atmosphere, though slightly too much background noise, I think because the acoustics of the room

Like all Carluccio branches the café is well designed and welcoming. The staff are pleasant and efficient. The food is fine but nothing to get too excited about. Chicken and spinach Risotto was reminiscent of an M&S chilled ready meal. Portion was small. This is a nice place but I’m left feeling that the food could be tastier. 2 courses with wine and coffee for two came to £76.00 with tip. Unfortunately I went home still feeling hungry.

First time I had ever eaten at a Carluccio's tonight. Deep fried rice balls filled with mozarella and ragu were delicious and light with a piquant pepper sauce dip. They made me want to go home and check in my Italian cook book to see if they were there. The bread tins with olive oil were light and very moreish. Lasagne and mushroom risotto first class for flavour and portion size. Best thing though is that for three starters, three mains, 3 good puds, 2 large glasses of wine, 2 fresh orange juices, bottle of water and cofee....the bill was £1 short of £70. Must not forget our very friendly and efficient waitress. All in all, very very good value!
