The beer is great but it is the food lifts this pub above the norm.Locals seem to be confidently brash but I suppose quite harmless. The Chef obviously knows what is what though I fear an accountant has got its little grey paws on the price structure - but then I guess you have to pay to dine in uber cool Barnsbury.

Our meal last Thursday night was delicious - belly of pork for the lady, duck for me- and the wine was fine. The staff are pleasant, even the seemingly spaced- out floppy fringed indie boys behind the bar,but what I do not understand was the background rock 'musak'.Who was it for? There was enough customer generated background noise for atmosphere, and I cannot imagin the indie brigade chosing such stuff. The accountant again?None the less a good place, which is why we are happy to venture across the badlands that seperate the Crown from Camden.

I love taking friends to the Crown. It has a great pub atmosphere, a good wine list and usually serves really nice pub food. However the last few visits I've been more than dissapointed.

Last night, I ordered the warm broccoli, asparagus and new potatoe salad with stilton. I expected a lovely light salad with a fresh dressing. What I got was a soy sauce dressing. Now I don't know if its me but Stilton and soy sauce just don't go!!

Did the chef get the bottles of soy sauce and balsamic vinegar mixed up?

I love this pub but come on keep the food simple.

Went to The Crown yesterday for dinner at 8pm with three friends. It was busy (all tables taken) but not overly rowdy or noisy - the atmosphere is just right.

Red wine was excellent. Our dinner was a little slow in coming (45mins I think - personally I get a bit twitchy after about 30mins) but worth the wait. I had pan-fried duck with red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes - really lovely. Others had steak, chicken pie and lamb - all had good things to say. The portions are large so you'll be full by the end. Main courses are £11-15 and worth the money.

Would recommend this place for an intimate, relaxed dinner, but you'll need to book.

The decor and atmosphere is great and the service isn't bad. The menu sounds great but unfortunately the food lets this place down. A cream sauce over my bream and crushed new potatoes was well errr... just lots of cream with some chives thrown on. I'd go again but probably order something more tricky to get wrong -like a burger .

Great traditional interior, great oval bar, tasty beers and food, and friendly staff and clientele. It is one of the best boozers around at the moment, I feel.
