This Is London

David Sexton - 3/5

Thursday, August 22, 2013 - Excellent warm soda bread had been made with a dash of molasses and was served with super-creamy butter topped off with crunchy crystals of sea salt; tap water in a jug had been flavoured with cucumber, possibly an acquired taste. A thick pea and mint soup, served warm, came not only with a splash of goat’s curd but had on the side a crunchy little croquette of soft, crushed broad beans. A pleasing little serving of mildly devilled shrimps on toast concealed a little tangy sauce underneath.

Went for their excellent value set lunch recently. Restaurant was quiet but not empty mid-week. Warm and competent service and the wine list is short but has good choice by the glass and is reasonably priced. The signature soda bread is truly outstanding and that's coming from an Irishman! Set the tone for what followed, as whilst there was only a couple of choices on the set menu they were excellent and by no means just the cheaper dishes. The minimalist decor may be swimming against the tide of bling in West London but it worked really well here. There's a generosity of spirit in this place and I'll definitely go back in the evening to see if it's a bit more buzzing, which it deserves to be.

A pretty little restaurant on a pretty little street.

This place can seat no more than twenty people though I dispute the other comment about not being able to have a private conversation - the tables are spaced far enough apart for there to be enough privacy.

Imaginative menu which I get the impression changes regularly together with a reasonably priced wine list. Food was pretty good too.

My only criticism was that courses were served very quickly - basically, no real gaps between food. We arrived at 8 o'clock and were finished not long after nine. Guys - slow down!!!
