Chez Gerard (Mayfair)

Had a table booked for 7pm following a great day at Chelsea Flower show. The restaurant was packed, and ours was a corner table. The tables were so tightly packed together my husband had to pull out the table to allow me to get in my chair (and I'm a size 10!). Could easily hear the conversations of all surrounding tables. My husband chose the 'special' - 10 oz sirloin - distinctly average and extremely overpriced at £25 (vegetables extra). My beef bourgignonne was quite fatty. The man on the next table also ordered the 'special' sirloin - and sent it back, saying 'it just doesn't taste nice' . He and his wife left the restuarant, not wanting to order a replacement meal. He was then charged full price for this!! We paid £90 for a meal (with no desserts), and over £10 for the service charge. When I went to pay, I left £5 tip, and they questioned this. I explained I would give the gratuity I wanted to, and I felt £10+ to be excessive. A very disappointing end to a fab day at the flower show. Give Chez Gerard a miss!!

Decided to treat my staff to a night out and gave them the choice of where to go - for some reason Chez Gerard came out tops. There were only 5 of us but with a variety of backgrounds/preferences etc and 2 vegetarians who I was assured would be catered for.
Arrived at 5.30pm, waitress eventually arrived at 5.55pm for a drinks order and was most definitely french - so much so that she couldn't actually understand english e.g. Vodka and tonic became Vodka & Soda. Food ordering was painfully slow despite there being 5-6 staff in the place and only our table left with Miss French. Deciding to try and speed things up I moved into french but asking for my steak cooked 'a point' left a completely puzzled look on her face and resulted in a visit from the chef to sort things.
The vegetarians were given the choice of one dish which appealed to neither of them but there was another dish available on the Christmas menu but we couldn't order this in isolation. At this point I would have walked out but was persuaded to stay and experience the most lacklustre meal I've experienced - more Chez Brewers Fayre than Chez Gerard.
Final humiliation was a 12.5% service charge added - for what ?? - there was no service.
In future I'll pick the venue and it'll be one of the good independents in the local area who is hungry for the business.

I just wanted to say I had a thoroughly wonderful time at CG Mayfair on Saturday night! It was recommended to me by a friend so I took my husband and we weren't disappointed!!! The service staff were all very attentive; the manager was also very knowledgable about the menu and the wines - his recommendations were spot on. All of the food was delicious - especially the steak. My husband is vegetarian and they were very helpful in adjusting one of the menu options for him. The ambiance was good too. It all made for a very pleasurable evening.

Had an amazing night there on friday....
The food was the best we had compared to any other chez gerrard.....
The service the best compared to any other restaurant in london (we are from U.S )....
The manager (tall dark guy in suit ) really made us feel at home and was spot on with his advice from the menu and wine list..
Many thanks we will be back

Lunchtime: Starters around £6.00, mains around £16.00. £1.50 cover automatically charge for tired looking olives and nuts already on table when you arrive and supermarket quality (check out the tell-tale pattern on the underside) ‘French’ bread.
'Special' Asparagus Soup so full of pepper it tasted of nothing else and burnt the mouth, was consequently inedible and returned. The man at the next table likewise returned his scallops as "not fresh", smelling "off" and in a "congealed” sauce.
Steaks were fine, though the chips are of the super-fine over-cooked variety and the watercress garnish could have done with trimming down to the few areas that were still fresh and green.
Charged for the soup, and service of 12.5% added to bill, though waiter was demoralised and sullen.

Visited on A Saturday with family including a 7 year old. Very enjoyable - decor good, service friendly and timely and good food. All in all - we had a three course meal each, 3 bottles of wine and it came to about £40 a head. Excellent value!
