I've gone past Ikeda for many years and was surprised at how often they stay closed (they don't open on weekends). Three days ago, I went there for dinner with family and some relatives. Although people dine sitting on chairs rather than the floor (as customers tend to do in more traditional Japanese restaurants), the atmosphere is one of the most authentic I've encountered so far. Waitresses dress in a kimono and the service was very friendly and efficient.

The food, however, was so-so. Between us all, we ordered a plate of sushi and sashimi, some deep fried tofu, a tonkatsu, grilled mackerel, among others. I mainly had the tonkatsu, with rice and miso soup. Our portion of miso soup was generous and tasty. The sushi and sashimi were really good too. The mackerel tasted kind of bitter and the portion was quite small. The tonkatsu had too many fatty bits and was overpriced considering this. I was quite full by the time we finished, but it wasn't the best meal ever. Another thing is that there were quite a few tables smoking, and the scent from the chefs' cooking nearby clings to your clothes and hair even after you've left the place.

I'd recommend Ikeda if you're looking for somewhere authentic, and are especially interested in sushi and sashimi, which appears to be their specialty. Their other dishes are quite average. Still, the atmosphere was nice and the friendly service made it quite a pleasant experience.
