I ate at Ikeda last night with high expectations. I was not disapointed.
The sushi is excellent. The sashimi is amongst the best I have tasted. Sashimi portions are a little small (Ikeda please take note).
We opted for the Omakase (chefs choice) menu. We had a gorgeous selection of all types of dishes including soup, fish, grill, fryer & rounded-off with sushi
It is true that the atmosphere is not romantic. I would describe it as calm & refined. Nobu fans will not like the decor but in my view the food here is the purer. (Nobu's sticky black cod is overwhelmed by the sauce).
Ikeda Banzai !

We went to Ikeda recently for an anniversary dinner on the strengths of the reviews and were more than a little disappointed. Yes - some of the quality of fish was superb and the staff very friendly. However, the king crab (the special of the day) was burnt with 2 out of the 4 pieces inedible. Also this restaurant is not the place for a romantic dinner for two - it is more like a staid japanese office with little ambience. Finally, it was incredibly expensive at £160 for two (more than even Nobu cost us!)
I wouldn't write it off completely but to my mind there are far better japanese places in London to try out. We wouldn't go again.

Ikeda is the best Japanese restaurant ever - the staff are fantastic, friendly and efficient. The food is amazing. I have been going regularly for a couple of years and have never had anything but fantastic food and service.

i went to Ikeda a few weeks ago for a special occasion. Great place and the service was outstanding. There was 4 of us and we basically spoke to the chef and told him to prepare whatever he wanted for the 4 of us. We didn't even open the menus. Definitely the way to do it. Besides the fact that they impeccably looked after us, the food was simply outstanding, the chef took great pride in preparing things that were not on the menu and coming out to see us. Of course, all that has a price... in tips as well but so well worh it! I will redo it in a heart beat next time on london.

Amazing sushi - the best i've had in London. Very authentic, great service. Recommend sitting at the bar and having the chef serve you whatever he feels like.

I just love this restaurant - the best Japanese in London hands down, no questions. In fact I think I am addicted and come here at least once a fortnight. Ikeda serves exquisite, delicious Japanese food of the highest quality and is a specialist in sushi and sashimi. The toro is divine as is the grilled eel. Sit at the kitchen counter and enjoy seeing the staff deftly prepare delicious grilled food, noodles and tempura. Service is excellent and attentive, the atmosphere is authentic, spotlessly clean but just a little faded and the prices are high but I consider provide excellent value for money. I have never had anything less than a completely delightful experience. Up there with River Cafe, the Ivy and Lemonia as one of the best restaurants in London.

Ikeda serves the best sushi in London! We had the black cod which was almost as good if not better than Nobu, the sushi was excellent - with otoro, ama ebi, hotate and salmon nigiri & the california roll particularly outstanding. I will definitely be heading back to Ikeda. Thought Yumi was the best in London? Might have to think again...
(only downside - be prepared to leave the restaurant with your clothes smelling of your dinner - the ventilation in the small restaurant could be better, but there's little one can do with an open kitchen!)

Stumbled across this place with my wife and were impressed with the polite, efficient service but mostly by the fantastic food. Not cheap though but well worth the little extra for delicious sashmi and the best teriaki we've had in ages.
