Cafe Med (St John Street)

We arrived late morning/early lunchtime on a Sunday to find ourselves the only customers. This can make for an uncomfortable atmosphere but the friendliness of the staff made up for it. Straightforward brunch-type dishes (herby omelette, eggs benedict and bruschetta) were fine and pannacotta with soft fruit excellent. Our toddler was made very welcome.
I can imagine it very busy either side of performances at nearby Sadler's Wells but I'd recommend it as an esaygoing destination for a Sunday brunch.

My partner and decided to have lunch at Café Med on Saturday after we drove past it and saw it was empty. We were lucky enough to get a table (as they were apparently fully booked) for lunch outside. I’m not sure how they justify that? We were there for an hour and a half, and it was still pretty empty outside… after the manager/receptionist or whatever he was turned away numerous other people saying that they were fully booked. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient, the food was ok. (I had a Chicken Ceasar Salad that tasted like fish) However, the bread and olives we had before our dishes arrived were delicious!!!! All and all, it’s not a bad place for lunch if it’s sunny outside. Just make sure you book in advance.

Just dropped in last minute on the way to Sadlers Wells and got the last table.
The staff were very attentive and yes they could do with an extra Chef but only because everyone is either late for the theatre or trying to beat the congestion charge and creep in after 6.30.
My advice is get there early and enjoy it.
Large old pub with some interesting rear areas which we didn't get to explore.
Drinks arrived fast with great olives and bread.
We only has one of the platters because time was tight but we added a Haloumi which was absolutely wonderful.
We've booked early for our next trip to SW so we will get to try the full menu.
A great find and a good price.

I'd been here once before at lunchtime and enjoyed the bistro food, and the Notting Hill branch is very nice. But a recent evening visit after the theatre (It's just round the corner from Sadlers Wells) was very disappointing. The service was unacceptably slow (Come on, in that location you have to expect a rush now and again) and unforgivably the inside of my fishcake was cold. When I mentioned this in response to the usual "Is everything alright?" there was no reaction whatsoever. No point in making a fuss. I just won't go again.

The food and the decor/mood were both really lovely. However, this restaurant has succumbed to the growing trend of adding the so-called discretionary 12.5% tip to the bill, only with a twist - they hand-write it which looks even worse. When we pointed this out to the head waiter, he was argumentative and admitted that although it wasn't classy, it was practical. The toilets are a disgrace - a real let-down in such a nicely furnished place
In addition, a diner at the next table told us that she ordered a drink on arriving, was asked by the same head waiter to pay immediately, and he then asked her if she wanted her change, which she thought was unbelievable.

Food was good. Service fine. The place is quite nice. Dimly lit, with candles and a small lounge in the back. It was pretty empty when we showed up with a group of 4 which was a shame but otherwise a good choice. A bit pricey for what it was though and the portions were a bit small.

I completely agree with the previous reviews. The atmosphere (decor, lighting and mood) is inviting, the food was surprisingly very good, and the service was perfect - attentive and welcoming.
I will definitely return.
