Saturday, September 06, 2008 - The dinner menu prices can reach stratospheric heights, but if you have the wherewithal, at least choose the ethereally delicious soufflé Suissesse. It was on that menu in 1974 and remains on this one today. "Kissing don't last; cookery do."

I went with my wife to have dinner at Le Gavroche and was satisfied with the meal, but not impressed. The food was very good. I had the rabbit as a starter and the steak for my main. My issue was with the small stuff that separate good restaurants from great ones on the service/ambiance side, which I believe Le Gavroche lacked. For example, in the dining room, you could hear the kitchen very clearly even if sitting far from it. I heard yelling and loud instructions. I also heard someone from the control room (in the stairwell) taking phone calls as the door was ajar. Finally, the waiters looked tired and rundown with messy hair, wrinkled jackets, etc.

A great restaurant feels effortless. I felt that serving the restaurant guests was hard work and it was evident.

I would rather go to "The Square" or "Greenhouse" the next time I'm looking for a perfect night out.

To experience this gastronomic "tour de force" is a privilege. Michel Roux is I believe an “old school” restaurateur, something that is becoming rare in a world where a chef actually spends time in his kitchen comes does come out of that kitchen and thanks his customers for their patronage.....

Nothing is overlooked at Le Gavroche and the customer feels they are at the centre. Service is very near perfect, as is the surroundings, table spacing and so on and so on.

The food was spectacular, the wine sublime and generous in quantity, I cannot think how the experience could have been improved upon?

After eating in some fabulous restaurants over many years, I was truly amazed to find this restaurant going straight to number 1 on my all time list. Is it worth a visit? Oh my god yes...........

I was disappointed. Thye food wasn't bad, just not outrageously good. And some pureed spinach tasted like grass puree. The room was too hot. The service was okay, but rather cold. It would be a good restaurant, but not at these prices. I expected more for what they charge.

Friday, July 24, 2009 - You'll find there's some clever work going on balancing luxe ingredients like truffles and foie gras with delicious things which cost the kitchen far less - a perfectly poached egg balanced on a Russian salad sounds good but dull until you realise there are a couple of gargantuan slice of summer truffle perching on top, and a creamy truffle emulsion binding the vegetables together. It's one of those menus where you're hard-pressed to make a decision, everything sounding so perfectly edible.

Thursday, October 30, 2008 - For me, dining at Le Gavroche is like coming home. It is not that I am a ‘regular’ - which makes it all the more remarkable - but rather the warm, welcome feeling I get being pampered and fed in my favourite restaurant in town. I know not all will agree, not all have shared such a time, but, to be blunt, I do not care. I can only write of what I know and that is my experience and my opinion. And I think that Le Gavroche is so good, so very, very good.

Friday, June 27, 2008 - The Le Gavroche. That is not an error that is emphasis. Londoners owe It a debt of gratitude. A huge debt. Before Its arrival, fine dining did not exist in the city. Eating well was not a priority/desire/care; ‘we knew nothing of the British indifference to food because we had only ever cooked for the rich,’ Albert Roux has admitted. It was the sixties and Albert and younger brother Michel, already in London as personal chefs to the Cazelet and Rothschild families respectively, saw their opportunity. With their former employers turned patrons, Le Gavroche was established in 1967 and It changed everything.
