The George Inn
your comments review this restaurant and win a bottle of champagne
Hi, I went to the George last night for a quick casual drink with a friend as was in the London Bridge area. The experience was unpleasant to say the least. Beautiful old coach inn suffering from an unsympathetic modernization; we sat in the featureless far room under blazing lights. We ordered a glass of red wine, to be told they only had one wine by the glass. For £8.50 we were served two tiny screw-top bottles with generic Spanish labels, as if we were in a plane. We were served throughout by a monosyllabic and aggressive skinhead. Have never been served wine like this before, even in the cheapest bar, and it proved to be undrinkable vinegar. We politely tried to return it, asking whether he had tried it himself and whether there was anything else they offered. He rudely said he wasn't a wine drinker and couldn't comment, that no-one else had a problem and that they only sold this wine by the glass -- we would have to buy a bottle if we wanted anything else. We're not vignophiles by any means and didn't expect anything special but it really was disgusting, worse than you would expect on a plane. Certainly not wine which should be sold at £4.25 a glass. Our barman's manner throughout was completely rude and uncaring. Finally he agreed to exchange the two glasses for the cheapest bottle as long as we paid the difference of £4.50 -- but then refused to take payment by card as it was under £5. We asked him to make an exception and he refused. Without getting into a full-blown argument, his aggressive and threatening manner completely ruined our evening. We felt cheated as in effect we had to pay for a bottle to get drinkable wine when we had just wanted a quick glass. We just wanted to pass on our feedback about the poor selection of wine and terrible service we experienced.

I brought my parents here for some food and I've got to say the food was dreadful. Not one meal (we had six) was good. A shame seeing that the building has so much character and has great outside space.

I have eaten here several times both in the restaurant and had the bar food. The bar menu contains the typical pub food whereas the restaurant upstairs is more diverse. Very atmospheric at Christmas when you can have a glass of mulled wine with you meal and lovely in the summer when you can sit out in the courtyard. There is also a folk session of the first Monday of every month.

I like The George. On a bright, warm evening it is pleasanto sit outside. But beware of the pigeons swooping almost constantly from a ledge on the inn's wall onto the tables to scavenge for scraps. These vermin are oblivious to human presence and cause quite a disturbance especially when the space outside the pub is busy. The management oughto do something abouthis!

This is an old coaching inn that is owned by the National Trust. It serves food upstairs where I had the standard pub fare pie & chips with a trusty pint of real ale. My wife had something simlair for less than £20. If your looking for a pub meal with a bit of charachter & atmosphere I'd definately reccommend it
