The George Inn

The pub itself is quite a nice old establishment. However, the lamb steak that I had there was diabolically tough and utterly tasteless. When I raised the matter with a member of the staff, she would do nothing----not even offer me a complimentary cup of coffee.

I visited the George on a Saturday afternoon with a few friends while visiting London and wanted somewhere historic and cosy for a nice meal and a few ales. The pub is tucked away in a courtyard, away from the hustle and bustle of the modern streets and looks everything a 17th century old timber-framed pub should be from the outside. Inside the "Old Bar" is a Dickensian treat of wood panelling, subdued lighting, dark cosy corners and a large roaring fire. Very atmospheric but unfortunately all the tables were full so we sat in the middle bar which was almost as nice. This too was busy but not noisy or crowded and after a short wait a table became free. Bar service for drinks was very quick and friendly despite being busy. We ordered the cod and chips which came very quickly and was absolutely superb. Cooked to perfection. The table staff were friendly and attentive, checking back with us to make sure our meal was OK and clearing our plates promptly once we were finished and checking to see if we would like anything else. Very chatty and happy to share a joke or two as they worked. Overall I was very impressed. Felt like a village local, not touristy at all. I cannot recommend this pub highly enough."
