The Light

I went with my partner recently and I was not impressed. The first person we met was this bloke dressed in jeans and a jumper who was reading us the special directly from the wall. We restaurant was empty (apart from two other tables) on a Friday night, strangely. The food was not bad. We enjoyed the oysters, the salads and the mains. However, upon receiving the bill we noticed we had been charged a dish we did not order and when we enquired our Spanish server replied 'The bill is correct, that's what you order'. My partner insisted the bill should be corrected as we were absolutely sure we had not order that dish and she replied raising her voice '..but you did, you order this'. It was a bit unreal. They finally took the dish off the bill and we left to the bar on a bitter note, having had to deal with that sort of treatment over a £6.00 discrepancy over a £150 bill. We had a cocktail at the bar and left promptly The Light is a beautiful Victorian industrial building but the crowd is mainly city workers and there are plenty of suits and screaming...Save The Light, dismiss the staff!

Our offices recently moved into the area and we have been trying out lots of the local eateries in recent weeks.
The Light is an interesting place; local history, good food, interesting use of an abandonned building, however something did not quite fit. Was it the slightly surley waitress, the over complicated menu or the thump of a busy friday night in the main bar next door.
I would go back due to the insanely good value specials on the blackboards. £12 for 2 courses......plus 1/2 price desserts. Also on the same black boards they have some wine specials, or should that be special wines.
Incredible value.

Celebrated my birthday here on saturday night. 20 of us had dinner in the restaurant - which was nice if a little souless, food was quite good and came out on time/all together (mostly due to us having reduced menu options)- the service was efficient yet quite curt at times and not friendly or warm, the restaurant was not at all busy which is a shame but the manager is not friendly and was strangely dressed in a hoody and combats while other waiting staff were in black shirts? When I booked I asked if we could reserve an area in the bar for later (bearing in mind we spent over £600 on dinner) but was told they didnt book areas in the bar on fri/sat nights as the bar would be full by then. However we saw areas in the bar downstairs reserved for parties on the night and in the upstairs bar it was pretty much positively empty and we got an area anyway...I just dont know why they were so difficult about it on the phone? Overall the place was ok, and quite nice that we didnt have to queue at the bar etc..however there is a strange contrast between the unatmospheric restaurant and the loud, full on atmosphere in the bars. One of our party was unwell and needed assistance leaving and the doorstaff were highly professional, efficient, reasonable and friendly which is so refreshing and pleasing. If you fancy something thats large with a bar and restaurant in one place and dont want to queue to get to the bar on a sat night then try this place. It also has really high ceilings so it feels spacious and doesnt get too smoky.
