Sri Thong

As a bit of a Thai junkie sri thong is a regular trip! Last visit I had pork hock slow simmered in a rich red curry broth. The favourites are all there - my wife's green curry was clearly homemade and bursting with all manner of flavours. There is a specials board where the chefs go 'off-piste' with variations such as chargrilled quail and spicy som tum salad. Wines are very respectable and great value. A 'street food' offer is popular with the lunch trade who can eat in or take out in handy lunchboxes.

FIRST CLASS THAI RESTAURANT - i HAVE BEEN GOING HERE FOR YEARS AND TAKEN MANY CLIENTS AND FRIENDS,ALL OF WHOM HAVE THOROUGHILY ENJOYED THE FOOD AND SERVICE. THE CALAMARI AND TIGER PRAWNS IN CHILLI AND THE CHICKEN AND PRAWN SATAY STARTERS
ARE EXCELLENT AND THE MAIN COURSE WITH DUCK BREAST COATED IN HONEY AND SIZZLING PORK WITH SINGAPORE STYLE NOODLES AND YUM SPINACH IS JUST MAGIC ON A PLATE.
THE SERVICE IS GOOD WITHOUT BEING IN YOUR FACE SO CAN HARDLY UNDERSTAND THE MISERABLE REVIEW OF THE ONE PERSON WHO ATE ALL ALONE IN AN EMPTY RESTAURANT. I AM GOING AGAIN TOMORROW WITH SIX OTHER FRIENDS FOR LUNCH AND WE KNOW HOW GOOD IT WILL BE.
TRY IT -YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT

I walk past this place fairly frequently, so as a Thai foodie I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, I am not impressed so will keep walking next time. My points are as follows:
- The Diet Coke I ordered was warm, even with the ice...very poor!
- I waited just over 20 mins for my food, and I was the ONLY customer in the place when I arrived! By itself, this waiting time is not necessarily a bad thing as it could mean that more care was put into cooking the meal. After all, if restaurant food arrives too quickly then it is very likely that it was not as freshly cooked.
- HOWEVER, now that I have tried the food I have to say that it was NOT worth the wait. The noodles were very difficult to bite into bite-size pieces, which I have not come across before. The portion size was adequate at best and the meal looked far less attractive than many similar dishes that I have had in other Thai restaurants. The taste was okay but very underwhelming, not compelling at all. Whilst it was not at all unpleasant, I have definitely had better, even from a Thai takeaway van!
- I wasn't keen on the waitress service either, as while polite their vibe was not very friendly or welcoming.
- They automatically added an 11% gratuity to my bill, which I found ironic considering all I have mentioned above. I've been to FAR better Thai restaurants than this, where gratuity is optional rather than imposed.
Someone who doesn't know any better may be satisfied with Sri Thong, as the food is edible and the venue is very modern and attractive. But I am a frequent customer at various Thai restaurants, including one called Mudmee just minutes away from this one -- and I have to say that Sri Thong simply does not measure up. Interestingly, prior to my visit today I had NEVER seen a customer in Sri Thong, unlike the vastly superior Mudmee, where I've seen plenty. For all I know this could just be due to timing on my part. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
