Was out with a work friend and decided to drop in to The Two Brothers as we wanted some fish & chips. Well this was truly a surprise, it was absolutely packed with diners & a queue outside of about 15 people. We started chatting to a few people who told us it was worth the wait. It took about 20 minutes to get inside, the very dishy Italian manager who I believe is called Enzio & was wearing a smart blue shirt welcomed us into his restaurant and assured us we would not have to wait to long for a table. 10 minutes we we seated and drinking a glass of Pinot Gregiou. I ordered prawns in garlic sauce (wow these were fantastic best I have ever had) and my friend had a dover sole to die for, the chips were excellent and the waitress was very good and attentive. The only disappointment was the Italian manager is married. Anyway we will be back for more with some friends.

I have only had a takeaway from this restaurant so I cannot say how I feel about some of it. Though food-wise I found the beer battered haddock was absolutely delicious, possibly one of the best takeaways I have ever had. The batter was crispy and flavoursome, the fish was fresh and well cooked. Definitely a ten for the food. Service was quite good though it took a while because it was very busy.

Because of the overall reasonable reviews, and our love of fish, we thought we would give the Two Brothers restaurant a try. Let me warn all right now - this place is to be avoided. To be unable to cook fresh fish at a fish restaurant - one wonders how this place can sustain itself - other than on its historic reputation. We tried them some time ago - standards of cooking have dropped drastically.

We had grilled Sea Bream which was hopelessly overcooked, dry and tasteless; and Dover Sole - while this was not overcooked, they achieved a watery tastelessness that was impressive. Starters were prawn cocktail - heavily oversauced and inedible and sardines which were amongst the most tasteless we have come across. The bill for 4 came to £135 including an obligatory 10%.

When we commented that the meal was exceedingly disappointing, they kept saying facetiously "thank you, thank you very much".

Treat this as a warning.

For the past ten years I have been intrigued by the Two Brothers Fish Restaurant on Finchley Road, as it always seemed to be jam packed. So as curiousity was about to kill the cat, my boyfriend and I decided to dine in the restaurant section yesterday evening. As usual, everyone was packed in there like sardines and I had to squeeze myself between our table and the people beside us to my seat. So to begin with, the tables are so close together, there is no privacy. But the decor of the restaurant is very nice and fresh.

We ordered Cod, Scampi and chips - the food arrived quickly in generous portions. The chips were perfect and delicious, as was the cod - it was tender and the batter was perfectly crisp. However the scampi was just mediocre - quite plain and to look at . They came with tartar sauce which could have been tastier. It was very oily and had no distinct taste. The meal came to £26 which included a glass of coke and water. The dinner was satisfactory, but no way worth that amount. Having said that, the staff were very efficient and friendly.

Maybe I was expecting the best tucker on earth from Two Brothers, but I have learnt my lesson to never judge the quality of restaurant by how busy it is. The Seashell on Lisson Grove is much better - but for a local north London chippy, I think we will be trying out Toffs next.

I have eaten here regularly for the last 16 years, and i am only 23, and have never once had a complaint. That means I have eaten there at least 100, if not 200 times. The smokies are amazing and the fish always fresh and nicely cooked. I would obviously criticize the decor and the size of the restaurant, but only one of those can be helped. The takeaway is not so amazing, although the food is still superior, the staff are lazy and complacent.

Overall I would say this is on a par with the Sea Shell of Lisson Grove, which is good praise i hope. Certainly give it a go, I hope you wouldn't be disappointed.

Cheese and Biscuits - 8/10

Monday, September 12, 2011 - I don't know whether I should technically still be ordering cod but if they taste as good as this I'm afraid you're going to have to come up with a very convincing argument to stop me. It was fantastic - a crispy (beer we were told) batter, not too thick and not too thin, containing flaky bright white very fresh fish. The chips were, well, I hesitate to use the word 'perfect' but I can't for the life of me think how they might be improved upon; cooked simply in vegetable oil, once doused with malt vinegar and salt they were evocative and nostalgic and just plain delicious in the way all great food is.
