Chez Gerard (Charlotte Street)

I took my wife to the Chez Gerard, Charlotte St on Friday 23rd May 2008. Was a bit unsure due to the mixed reviews on this site but glad we did. It had a nice atmosphere and the service was pleasent and attentive without being OTT. The food was very nicely presented , well proportioned and tasty. My rump steak was very good and cooked just as requested alothough my wifes fillet steak had a little too much fat still on it. Prawns on my starter were a little tasteless but the salmon made up for it. It's probably a bit pricey overall but being central London maybe not ( don't get to eat out in London very often !!) Overall it was very good especially so as our £100 meal only cost us £30 when using the excellent Tesco vouchers. Cheeky I thought to charge £4 for the tiny pot of nuts, olives and bread that was already on the table - complimentary? - clearly not. Anyway there is probably better if it's your own money but great when Tesco are paying :-)

Do not waste your money. Totally forgettable meal and a complete and utter rip off. I havehad better steak at a Berni Inn.
2 starters/2 mains and one dessert. No alcohol or coffees came to £73.00.
No wonder they are doing a deal with Tesco Clubcard to try to tempt people.

We went Chez Gerard on Sunday afternoon, at one point we were going to cancel due to the reviews on this site. I am glad I didn't. The services was very good and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The food was lovely, fresh and very very tasty. The atmosphere is relaxed. I would go back and eat there again. The only thing that I was disappointed on was the Service charge was added to the final bill, personally I feel it should be up to the individual, but saying that I would have tipped as we enjoyed our afternoon.

How very disappointing our meal was, both in terms of service and the quality of the food. It started badly when the waiter forgot to take one of the orders. Then they forgot to bring a starter, and when they did bring it it was burnt. My starter of goats cheese was soggy with supermarket style bagged salad leaves. I ordered fillet for my main course which came with cold over-salted fries, cold bernaise, and cold side dishes. My friend had beef bourginon which tasted of raw alcohol.
The final insult was when we were denied puddings because they had another booking for our table. Overall very shoddy service and badly cooked food.

Pleasant restaurant with good food and attentive staff. Chez Gerard is located on lively Charlotte Street, the buzzing centre of fashionable Fitzrovia. As such, there is a great atmosphere in and out of the restaurant, making it a wonderful place for dinner.

Went here for a romantic meal. Got stuck on a tiny table in the middle of the floor (tables cramped) even though there were tables at the side and booths available. Service poor and un-helpful. Food not very good either. Overpriced, for the not-very-good quality. When I asked for bread to help mop up the tons of sauce my food had been drowned in, you'd have thought I'd asked for something shocking. Obviously don't want their customers to be human/variable! They managed to ruin what should have been a great night out. Shame. Warning: long trek up two floors to get to the toilets - don't go here if you want disabled access.

Lovely restaurant. Terrifying prices. £200 for 2 people for 2 courses each, 2 bottles of wine, 2 coffees and 2 bottles of water. That's £100 per head. There is no justification for this sort of charge.

Sometimes it goes wrong......But this was the worst meal in a reasonably expensive restaurant I have ever had. Having dined at the Chez Gerard restaurants over the years the one thing that was entirely relaible was a type and quality of food that maintained a consistant standard. Not easy to ruin a steak medium rare when it is the speciality of the house. Scallops starter was burnt for two. Took ages to get a waiter who changed the dishes for not burnt but encrusted in salt. Tried to eat abandoned and explained why. Puzzled and slightly apologetic waiter. Chatau Briand main course took forever. Eventualy arrived....well done.....No thats not Bravo its completely over cooked. Back it goes. Here is the medium rare version at last..... alas alack pommes frittes left on table now cold. Can't bear another wait lets just eat before we faint from starvation. No real apology at any time offered. The food was a disgrace at any price. Service was appauling. Pas encore Cheri Gerard.

Lovely, friendly staff.
Olives and peanuts and a bread basket (not warm, but at least it was there) await you on the tables. Restaurants so often omit these nowadays.
Traditional French menu, with very few surprises. However, I ordered the "marmite de poissons et crustaces" and, though usually I do not eat mussels, the shellfish were absolutely delicious and there was plenty of salmon and monkfish in the gloriously rich, creamy wine sauce. Beware that you have to order vegetables as a side dish which add £2.95 to the bill.
My partner also loved his "rare breed pork medallions with roasted grapes and pancetta in a brandy and red wine sauce with mash". Sounds as good as it tasted.
The two of us had a main course with haricots verts on the side and a bottle of house white which came to around £55. I thought this was a relatively fair price for this expensive area of town, and divine-tasting, although there were far more expensive items on the menu.
