Monday, January 31, 2011 - It's fancy, though the food is far less so. It is a reliable solid Italian that has served a particular louche, British public over the years. There is a lunch menu at 19.50 for 3 courses, and from that a starter of hot grilled smoked mozzarella oozing across the plate with a cherry tomato and olive salad and anchovy mayo did not feel like the budget option. That said, crisp curls of deep-fried calamari served in a boat made of greaseproof paper was worth the extra expense. Main-course pasta dishes are huge bowls of carbs, cooked so they still have some bite and give, dressed with lots of the advertised ingredients, be it a dense, gamey ragu of wild boar, hunks of lobster or a scarlet sauce of tomatoes cooked down to their essence.

I am not at all surprised by so many bad reviews of Little Italy from Frith Street in Soho. I have spent there a bit of time on a few occasions myself and know it a bit from the inside as well. Many say that the staff tries to pour the wine all the time - that is true. They are being trained and constantly reminded to do that by the owners, as as we all know drinks generate best income. If you say that staff is rude - this is again probably what they learn from their bosses, who are mean, rude and lack decent behaviour. You can see what is happening behind the scenes if you observe a little. What an appalling place to be and work in! I am actually sorry for its staff... who probably don't stay there for long anyway... and that is why the service can be poor... The food - average really, quite often either undercooked or arriving warm rather than hot. Overall - what a waste of money!

At a little more than £200 for two people at lunch Little Italy ought to be a first class restaurant with wonderful food and service. Unfortunately it is not. Lunch there today included a bottle of wine that by the standards of a very expensive wine list was in the medium price range and a glass each prosseco to start. The starters and main courses were good. We both had deep fried baby squid which were crisp and tasty. My main of veal was also good as was the fillet steak my companion chose. The sweet course of profiteroles was very poor. They were soggy, stodgy and heavy. When the maitre d' came over to ask why we didn't like them, instead of apologising and offering to take them off the bill, he simply argued. Not a professional attitude and not a way of encouraging me to go back to the restaurant. But of course at £200 for a lunch that was no better than just good, I won't be returning.

Went to Little Italy for a party last weekend. The food was shockingly bad. The starter of home-made ravioli was just about bearable but the pasta was too thick. The main course of fillet of lamb was inedible. I couldn't recognise what cut the lamb was as it was smeared in a gloopy 'Bisto' type gravy on a pile on insipid sweet potato mash. They had even added red currants to the mix to make it even sweeter. The accompanying green beans were overcooked and soggy. The 'piece de la resistance' was the only dessert option, Tiramisu, which was vaguely tiramisu flavoured whipped cream arranged in a basket. The wine was also pretty undrinkable so we had to revert to cocktails. On the plus side, the music and dancing were excellent and the service was pretty good if you didn't mind the music reverting to a recorded ' Happy Birthday' every ten minutes for lucky person somewhere in the establishment.

This used to be good. But now...well, so overpriced and rude arogant staff, who seem to forget that they arent doing you a favour serving you, you are doing them a favour keeping them in a job. Not that they should have one. As they are not very good at it. In fact they are terrible. If they want you to drink the wine so fast, why not try bringing it within a 35 minute period, as opposed to trying to pour it when it finally does arrive, every three or four minutes. Fish tasted like Findus or something. Little Italy? Little to do with it really....

what's happened to this place..?? last time i went, admittedly a few years back, the food was delicious and the service great. this time the pasta dishes were tasteless, service poor (they forgot our drinks, argued constantly with each other and took over 30 mins to bring the bill). £55 for two tasteless pastas and two fruit juices is outrageous. the only plus point was the great music and lively atmosphere. unless i hear someone else has taken over this place i'm not going back, particularly when bocca di lupo and polpo are just round the corner!!

Average prices for very basic quality makes poor value for money. The waiter that insists on saying everything both in english and italian is embarassing for all. On the night i question whether they had a proper chef. My risotto was too salty and looked like a side dish of plain rice. In the waiter's words that was not their best work. It's always a bit of a worry for me when I know I can do a better job myself (and I am by no means brilliant at cooking)

Vile disgusting, overpriced food. The fish is outrageously priced and is obviously frozen as it tasted like cotton. When I confronted the owners about it they acknowledged that it was frozen but made some excuse for it. For those prices, the food should be fresh.
