Locals rely on this place as probably the best fish n' chippy in the West End if not London. Mr Christou runs a delightful institution delivering good quality in a friendly way. Expanding the premises has made obtaining a table slightly easier but not much. Yes, with such large turnovers of tables, quality occasionally disappoints. However, the good times vastly exceed the less than brilliant. Mr Christou ensures that everyone stays happy even when he's extremely busy. Oh and it is very inexpensive for the location.

I was very disappointed by this 'renowned' fish and chip restaurant. The fish was mediocre, as was the service. The chips were good, however I was appalled that they served cheap, vinegary ketchup with the meal!

Finally I found the Golden Hind (I ended up at the Golden Union by mistake last time and that was a shocker!)

Fresh fish, pleasant and professional service and you can tell this place is an institution. Looks well run. Beware of the nearby imitator!

The best fish and chips I ever had so far (after 6 months living in London) : fresh and tasty food, genuine place in a handy and beautiful area, pretty quick service, very nice people...what more can we ask?

Shocking service. Staff and owner had no idea what was going on, who was waiting and in what order... it was complete chaos.

We were sat at our table for a full 25 minutes before someone gave us a menu, despite repeated attempts to get one.

Fish and chips were good, nothing special though. Two Brothers is much better for both the food, choice and most definitely the service.

I would go to the Golden Hind again.... but only if I had reserved a table in advance and was in a patient mood.

Best fish and chips I have had for a long, long time. The mushy peas were delicious too. Very friendly and fast service even on a busy Friday evening. I will be back very soon.

After reading so many rave reviews of this place my son ( a real chip fanatic) and I gave it a go this evening. I'm sorry to say we would not go again. My cod was indeed absolutely superb, however the chips were really nothing special and the service was not at all good. We waited for our food well over 30 minutes. It's clean but very basic with formica tables and SO NOISY! OK for a "chippie" but I expected a little bit more for the money. £9.10 for cod and chips with a heavy hint a tip is expected. The vanilla ice cream was very good but not good enough to entice us to go again. What a shame.

What a funny place. Will definately go again. I hate skin on fish when I get fish n chips but here there is no skin. Fish was great, crisp batter and good size, chips ok. Served with mushy peas and tartar. The acoustics downstairs are well shot. Take ear plugs if you have sensitive drums. You can take your own alcohol, they let you go across the road and get some if you arrived thinking they serve wine etc like I did. No corkage. Very very relaxed atmosphere and staff are a good laugh. Tables and decor very basic overall worth a vist. Cost I thought was good value, considering in my area of London fish and chips comes out around £8 and is cooked in old oil.

It was Friday night and as we were round at my mum's we thought we would save her the bother of cooking a get fish and chips in. Now as someone who grew up in 80's West London I know the only place to go is the "Seashell" on Lisson Grove however a quick drive up there showed it is still shut after the fire and there seems precious little activity to suggest it will re-open. What is a hungry West End family to do?

Well we decided to give the Golden Hind a go. We had been put off using it previously as they had refused to sell my wife a portion of chips on it's own during a previous visit. However we were prepared to put such eccentricity aside and give it a go. We weren't dissapointed. The room is tiny set up with rustic basic wooden tables and the counter/servery hatch at the rear of the room. It is very post war austere. However they took the order in a friendly fashion and suggested we came back in 10 minutes to pick it up. We popped into the "Angel in Fields" for a quick drink and 10 minutes later exactly it was ready to pick up.

It has to be said it was extremely busy in the "Golden Hind" and a touch chaotic as you had dining in punters, people like us who popped in to takeaway and also a large volume of telephone orders. However our order was correct and we proceeded back to my mum's to eat it. It has to be said it was extremely good. Really fresh fish beautifully cooked, not too greasy, not too heavy on the batter. Perfect really. My plaice wasn't huge but it was delicious and the ladies loved their cod. I have a bit of a love hate relationship with chip shop chips. They can be really stodgy and not cooked through. These however were in a class of their own. Really tasty and crispy.

All in all a great experience and better that "The seashell" had been prior to it's fire. I would definetly go again. It came to £16 for 3 of us which is great value. Not sure if I would eat in as it looks a bit cramped but as a takeaway that was faultless.

Excellent batter - more like tempura than the thick, greasy stuff so many places produce - chunky chips and top notch mushy peas. The fish (I had haddock) was generously sized, and there was plenty of mushy peas, but a few more chips would have been nice. The tartare sauce (if that's what it was supposed to be, rather than remoulade) was a bit bland, though - to my mind it needed more 'bite'. Also, I'd have preferred a proper mug of tea to just a cupful. But, overall, the quality of the food is very high and the service is very good. It is quite expensive though for what's essentially "just" fish & chips (but then, I'm judging it against takeaway fish & chips outside of London).

Wednesday, April 14, 2010 - Mushy peas were smooth, sweet and inoffensive, it's quite standard, but disappointingly the chips were soggy and no better than any takeaway. There are reports that these bad boys are double fried maris pipers, well if they are, it makes it even more disappointing then as they were just bad. Thank goodness for Grimsby, because the fish was gloriously flaky, juicy all the way through and which exhibited a bouquet of greasiness. I was most impressed with the portions - humongous.

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 - It is said that the secret to really good fish and chips is in the batter and quality of the ingredients. At the Golden Hind, they use a mystery batter mixture and measure the amount of breading to fish meticulously; this leads to a scrumptiously crisp, unusually light and very clean result with virtually no greasy trace. As regards the produce, their purveyors supply them with fresh-caught seafood daily from Grimsby. No freezing is involved and indeed, the food tasted all the better for this.
