I'm so upset... I can't believe you've gone!

I was taken down those stairs for the first time by my father who used the place for business lunches, he always had a bottle of scotch on the shelf with his name written on the label which would appear seconds after we sat down.

I loved the place and although I don't live in london I used to visit a couple of times a year, they still remembered me :o) Not surprising I had my 25th 27th and 31st birthday meals there..... Five vegetable roll with shrimp and fried leeks with pork I'll miss you, I've never found them on any other menu!

Does anyone know where they've gone???

It's the end of an era....

Gutted to find a Pret instead of the old entrance to Ikkyu. It was a gem - something out of Tokyo and something out of Blade Runner. I am sure some of the boxes had been there for over 20 years. Hope to find a replacement.

I can't believe Ikkyu has gone. I spent several years living in Japan and used to meet up there with the other 'gaigin' friends I made during my stay. It was the closest thing to being back in Japan and going to an Izakaya (a very informal place where you go for a drink and order food in stages during the evening) I agree with the reviewer below that it's not the place for people who'd rather pay more for mediocre food in a flash restaurant, but for those of us who prefer something with a bit of character it was perfect.

This place had a great atmosphere and yes it was a little chaotic at times. That was all part of the charm. The food was amazing value and easily as good as places charging much more.

Does anyone know if they relocated or set up something similar. I'd be the first to go.

Sayonara Ikkyu. You'll be missed

A shame that this monument to Japanese food has closed down. The best sushi in London. Authentic atmosphere, busy and exciting.

Thank you Ikkyu for years of delicious food.

Gutted to hear this place has closed, it provided a more authentic alternative to the rather wanky more expensive Sushi restaurants in central London. The fish was always fresh and the atmosphere always lively, Ikkyu will be missed.

i am truely sorry to find out this hidden gem of authentic but never over priced japanese food is no longer with us, i will miss spending time at the kitchen bar watching the dynamics between the 'master' and students or blindly ordering dishes i dont know with mostly marvelous sometimes shocking results or the wonderful aromas that engulf your senses even before you part the beaded curtain to the basement restaurant that felt like one of the few remaining well kept secrets left in that area of london

I have been a regular of this restaurant for almost 17 years. Except for a few glitches which occur in every restaurant from time to time, the food, especially the Sushi and Sashimi have been without equal. His Sushi chef has been there for a long time and had left for a short period and as a result the Sushi became mediocre. Never having been to Japan, I would imagine it's exactly like you would find there, with all it's little piccadillos and customs which may be somewhat different from western customs. However if you like raw fish in all its many guises, then (providing the top chef is there) you can't go wrong in dining there.

I am a big fan of Japanese food. And I am a regular eat there almost every week. The restaurant is alway busy. I love food and asmosphere. It likes you are in the centre of Japan. The decoration is so cool. Most of time staff call food in Japanese and of course you will hear that. Even I do not know any word, I still enjoy their traditional. Also menu is variety and resonable price compared with the others. Highly recommend Eel on top of rice, raw fresh fish and toriyaki. You MUST come!
