I arrived at noon on a Wednesday and when I left half an hour later (train to catch), only one other table was taken. The food was a pleasant surprise although perhaps I should have expected such good quality given the Japanese staff and chef. My tonkatsu set lunch for £10 was excellent value and everything on the tray was properly Japanese ( I spent 10 years living there). I will certainly be back.

Although hidden away in a shopping passage, you should not pass it by for lunch in favour of other restaurants in the area.
A good way to judge the authenticity of the food is to check how many Japanese businessmen are dining in the restaurant. The food, especially the lunch boxes (either rice or noodle based) are tasty and satisfying and the Japanese diners around you will slurp in agreement.
Service is somewhat slow but the food is worth the wait.

An excellent old favourite I keep going back to time and time again. Traditional Japanese food, simply prepared which just lets the very high quality ingredients do the talking. And they're great. Ambience is fine (though lighting is a little bright, as mentioned below) and service is reasonably good. All in all an excellent restaurant, and the set dinners & lunches are particularly good value.

The atmosphere is good, the service excellent and most importantly the food is of a very high standard. I do think it is one of the best places for sushi in London.

There is something about Japanese restaurants and their love of bright lighting that gets me everytime ~~ despite the glare, the food is brilliant. It's basic almost izakaya style in my eyes, but dependable for good bit of sashimi or nasu dengaku (baked aubergine with miso). Haven't tried the private rooms - but probably worth a try. Wouldn't say it's the best sushi in town - but that's hard to find outside Japan anyway!

I cannot fathom how this restaurant can be rated a '10' for food by so many reviewers. The sushi were not fresh on the friday night that we went, the rice was too cold and hard; the agedashi tofu was a disaster, the grilled fish mains were too, and many others more. We defintely gave this restaurant a chance and ordered a wide selection of dishes (sushi, grilled mains, yakitori, etcetc.) from the menu, none of which really came up to scratch. I hope less folks would be led into visiting this restaurant and expecting a decent meal. This restaurant doesn't even get the basic dishes right! I suggest if you are after japanese meal on a budget try Sakura (and brave the erratic service), that's the only reason that keep people going back despite the pretty poor service!

Nambu Tei is a wonderful restaurant. It is ideal for anyone. Everyone there is helpful especially one man.He was a Sri- Lankan and his name was Juvan. He helped me and my friends choose what we wanted to eat. He was being very kind and friendly to us all. Every five minutes he asked if we were alright and if we needed anything.
The food was delicious. Although, it would have been nice if there was a seperate non-smoking section. In my opinion out of all the Japanese restaurants i have been to, Nambu Tei is the best.

I dine in this restaurant quite often always for lunches. The service is efficient and friendly. Food is well presented and very tasty. Good value for money on lunch sets. I took few friends there already and they also loved it. Fantastic atmosphere, I would recommend it to anyone.

I ate here for the 1st time last week and absolutely loved it. We were lucky enough to have one of the 'traditional' rooms downstairs to ourselves and it really added to the experience. I actually forgot I was in London and regularly had to remind myself I was not back in Japan -it was a shame to have to leave the restaurant! The food was flawless -in the way it looked and tasted. I would suggest the sashimi platter to anyone -the tuna is the best I have tasted outside of Japan.
I wholly recommend Nambu-tei to anyone who wants a REAL taste of Japanese cuisine. I was plannig my next visit before I was even out of the door, and I know you will too!
