Whenever I'm in London, I never miss to eat at Veronica's. I havn't been disappointed in years. This means something, cause I know this place, when it was still owned by Veronica herself.

Excellent food, very good wine, pleasant service and good value for money. What do you need more?

I've eaten here three or four times now, and never been disappointed. The menu is creative, the service has been pleasant and unhurried, and the dishes well-prepared. The outdoor seating is ideal on a warm night; the restaurant is on a fairly quiet, green square. Read their menu beforehand online if you're trying to decide whether to go; I really like their 'medieval to modern' approach. PS I think it's just called Veronica's now.

I booked Veronica's for a special occasion and quickly came to regret it.

The service was initially not too bad - our server was attentive and polite. The menu itself is fairly limited but covers five A4 pages thanks to paragraph-length descriptions of the dishes and their historical/cultural provenance. While I am sure this is intended to be part of the charm, it comes across as superfluous window-dressing.

The restaurant's matriarch then does a theatrical shtick explaining every dish on offer and subsequently performing an encore for the desert choices. As personal preference, I am not a huge fan of this (see above) and would hope that the quality of the food speaks for itself.

The starters and mains were good, but side portions were extremely meagre and vegetables were poorly prepared. Deserts, however, were very good.

Whether this dining experience warranted a staggering £100+ bill is another matter and with the proliferation of excellent dining in the area it's a certainty that better value for money can be found elsewhere.

After the meal, I queried two minor items on the bill. The response of one of the proprietors to this fairly innocuous enquiry was staggeringly rude. In repsonse, I immediately asked that the 12.5% 'optional' service charge be removed as statement of our total dissatisfaction with the whole experience.

A previous reviewer called the restaurant a 'cynical rip off'. No arguments here - look around the area and you'll discover many far superior places at a fraction of the price.

Surly staff, undercooked and overpriced food, poor wine list and zero atmosphere.

Who could ask for more?

Avoid - there are many more restaurants nearby with much more to offer.

Table of four.

Worst value for money we have experienced.

Described as "British cuisine" from over the centuries. In fact no British staff so far as one could gather and the food did not appear home made. Food was underheated.

No bread available at 9 pm.

Fish and chips serverd with cold mushy peas in a tiny ramikin.

Game pie filled with Lea & Perrins sauce with a miserable half-cooked puff pastry topping.

Kedgeree like the scrapings out of the bin with a warped dry piece of haddock thrown on top.

Bread & butter pudding out a packet with a single mocking raspbery on top.

There was no smoking area. We were sat next a pair of chain smokers that made us feel ill. Smoking even while they were eating.

Service unprofessional. Requested wine unavailable.

104 pounds. A cynical rip off.

Try the steak on a plank of oak. It's probably the best steak in London.
