I visited last week and this will be my last time.
The dishes described have a certain poetic licence conjuring up a pretence of being in India.
However the portions are small (not that is a probelem), the food all tastes the same and in my opinion the chef who created this menu has long gone and I would bet that the described ingedients do not match the end product.
Poor value for money, over priced wine and food,

Shockingly bad all round. Shabby decor, miserable surley waiters, bland cooking, no use of seasonal produce, high prices and so on.
Shame as it used to be quite good back in the day.

The food in this restaurant is overpriced and horrible (70 quid for 2 courses for 2 people and a bottle of water)..do not go here!
If you enjoy over cooked fish/meat drowned in overly sweet/salty sauce this is the place you'll get it! Agree re the earlier comments - you could save yourself serious cash by buying a jar from tesco's, at least it won't be thrown at you by a disgruntled waiter or have a skin on the top from being under heated lights for too long.
The people who have made comments below about this being "authentic" Bengali food don't have any idea what they are talking about. I went to the restaurant with someone from Bangladesh and he assured me that this was not how Bengali food tasted (we ate fish dishes from west Bengal-Golda Chingri and Bengal Tiger Fish).
We also had problems with the Management. My friend talked to the Manager about the food being drowned in sauce that tasted like it was from a jar and he could not have cared less, apparently they haven't had a complaint in 7 years??? (he obviously doesn't read this website). We also had to go through the inconvenience of getting the "optional" tip removed from the bill.
Save yourself time and money...don't go here!

I've had a few currys in my time - but this was bland in so many ways. Passable as something a friend would dish up out of a jar from Tesco's but in no way was it authentic.
I took my parents there last night, and aside from the food being overpriced, the service was none existant. To say that it was bad service would actually indicate that they provided one - they're not engaging, they barely even say anything to you throughout the whole time you're in there.
Bengal Clipper - one thing to note if you're reading this, is that an optional service charge is just that - I refused to pay their service charge (which was automatically added on) and the waitor needed management authorisation to remove it! I'd not normally remove a service charge, but when I was pretty excited following press reivews and what not, it was nothing but a disappointment
Ditch the Tescos Value curry and do something decent. Won't be going back.

Hilariously everyone here seems to think it's awful or the best meal they've ever had. Many reviews descend into abusive language in the passionate outbursts the Bengal Clipper seems to incite from people.
Anyway, just to add to the controversy - the Bengal Clipper is probably the best curry joint I know, short of Tandoori nights in East Dulwich.
Mmm just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Though the decor is somewhat dated .... Highly recommend it though

This ia a genuine Bengali gourmet experience and not a standard Indian high street restaurant madras and rice with one chapatti to sop up the beer !. I have been dining here for years. The service and food is commensurate in Bengali terms with the nearby top range Conran restaurants along the river. It is pricey but not excessively so.
The fool that gave this restaurant a negative review must have had his taste buds excised by a cockney pie and mash dining experience and I do not believe he regularly eats cuisine from the Indian sub continent. What a stupid plonker ! Stick to your English stodge ,mate !

To the point, I do not recommend this place.
The food is BLAND and the currey we ordered tasted nothing like described - and trust me I eat at enough of these reteraunts to know what a curry is supposed to taset of.
The service was OK.
The vale for money was poor.
I have only been here one and I hope it is my last.
Put simply, you can get better food elsewhere at a fraction of the price.

It's not Indian you ignorant cnuts!
If you want the beer and curry crap, go to your "Indian" restaurants.
This is proper Bangadeshi food.

Not much to add to the good reviews on this page. Simply the best "Indian" food I've ever had and the most fantastic attentive and careful service. It is expensive but its not a curry house to go to after a pub session its a gourmet experience. The bad reviews must come from proprietors or relatives of the Brick Lane emporiums!

I can't IMAGINE how anyone could give this place a favourable review. In short, it's AWFUL. I live right across the street in Butler's Wharf, but still have to travel when I fancy an Indian. I had a curry there that had so little flavour, that the red sauce....if I didn't know that I was in an "Indian" restaurant...I would have taken for some sort of bland, Italian, red sauce.
The place looks great, all polished and shiny...and very upmarket. But you can get MUCH better food for well less money at any local curry house. Trust me, I do not exagerate in the least. This is the worst Indian food I've ever had. I thought Dockmasters at Canary Wharf was bland and tasteless. Ha. It's Gavrouche compared to the Bengal Clipper. Save yourself.....go elsewhere.
