Very average Canontese and Shanghai style cuisine. Do NOT go here for Hunanese or Sichuan style cooking - they are not able to prepare any food in these styles.
The food served is of average quality and quite over priced for what you get.
The service was excellent, very attentive, along with a reasonable atmosphere.

Ate there last night for the 1st time after reading about it here and Hardens guide. Expectations therefore high and we were not disappointed! Terrific food, great service and my youngest daughter (aged 10) hit it off with Mr Peng ....sensible wine list, let Mr Peng choose and you will not be disappointed. Thoroughly recommend. We'll be back !

The range of different and unusual dishes is lovely. The dishes are generally very tasty although not quite in the premier league. The decor is bog standard and the service can be a little off at times.

Ate there this evening for my girlfriends Birthday
The food was great, varied and in the end very good value. No bland cantonese dishes here. The crab finale was amazing. Lots of chili, garlic and ginger.
The wine list was interesting and the mark ups sensible. Try the Priorat Red.
The service was abrupt, in your face and VERY charming. Nancy Lam eat your heart out.
The only Chinese in London with atmosphere!!!

Overall a very good place. You go there for the variety. The quality is reasonable but not quite top notch and there is an overuse of oil. It certainly pleases a london crowd bored of "crispy aromatic duck" or "sweet and sour pork".
The dishes presented are rustic and tasty, reminding me of a "high quality" meal in a regional chinese city. There are flaws such as too much salt in bits of the fried rice, and there are sublime highlights such as the de-boned steamed fish.
The service can be a bit sloppy, but the industriousness of Mr. Peng and his son carries the evening through. The wine list is interesting and varied. The european white selection is a touch underpowered and cliched for a spicy chinese meal - good for sushi maybe, but not lamb with spices and chilis. This food needs something stronger.
Conclusion: best to go with a big group with big eaters. Excellent value.

I have always had excellent dining experience and fantastic food.
As an oriental commenting on oriental food, this must be the best in London.
To get the best dining experience at this restaurant, here are some tips:
(1) book a table
(2) arrive on time
(3) don't order from the menu. Just say, Boss Mr Peng, you decide, (but do tell him what you like or don't like)
(4) order wine - the food goes best with alcohol)
And the delicacies will keep coming.

We went to Hunan on Saturday night and found the whole experience entertaining. The food was delicious and custom made ... and the restaurant manager reminded me of a traditional Chinese father - It felt more like we were eating at a friend's parent's house rather than out at a restaurant. Once we had finished all the dishes we were asked, "Are you still hungry" and upon answering, "yes”, we were showered upon with more food!
In addition, the Australian wine on the menu was superb and plenty of on street parking on a Saturday night!
Highly recommended!

£100 Bill for 5 starter size portions of prawn and tofu and 1/2 bottle of saki. I was horrified. When questioned the manager immediatly took the service charge off the bill and explained that next time we came we should call him first to "arrange" a deal. This place had zero attmosphere, its overpriced and we wern't informed of the dishes brought out and put on our table. After hearing mixed reviews I thought I would try it out, however I wish I hadn't as I left £100 lighter and with a very bitter taste in my mouth.
0/10.

My wife, daughter and I chose this restaurant almost by chance - and the gods smiled on us! We experienced seriously good food. Each dish was very heavan! I lived in China for some time and never had anything as exquisite as this. And Mr. Peng will give you free tips on what's healthy and what isn't into the bargain!Let him choose (according to your tastes) and you won't fail.
We will be definitely returning.

I love the food at this place which, in London at least, is unique and rates with the very best at any price. But I totally understand how some people have had a bad experience here if you don't 'get on' with the staff.
Mr. Peng sees himself as a philoanthropic entertainer, he works only for the pleasure of delighting his 'good' customers with great food, anyone else can just leave as far as he's concerned.
It definitely helps if you are a regular, order wine, book a table and, most importantly, find his brusque manner enchanting: then he will shower you with fantastic chinese food and he really becomes quite charming later on. If I'm not in the mood for this kind of (or lack of)service I go somewhere else that evening.
Perhaps many people (quite rightly) feel that they shouldn't have to conform to the hidden 'rules', but if they did try it a few times, they would come back again and again for the food!
