Brasserie Roux

My husband and I received last minute theatre tickets on November 8th, so deciding to make an evening of it checked the restaurants local to the venue. We were drawn to Brasserie Roux immediately, the sample menu looked great. Brilliant pre theatre deal, £15-3 course or £20-3 course with wine. We weren't dissappointed at all, ambience was wonderful, food delicious and service perfect. We would definitely go again and have already recommended it to friends.

we lunched on tuesday last 5 th june 2007. The food was passable ,but not worth a detour for.
The main complaint was the wine list. It was the first time ever that every wine we ordered came with a different year- 3 tines in a row. the Montagny 2002 arrived as 2004 [ very bad] , the savigny les beaune 2002 came as 2004 , and the final pudding wine [Constansia form S.a. was 2001 instead of 2000. The sommelier was hopeless- I would have sacked him on the spot after his feeble excuses about not being able to change the list without his superiors agreement !
Can anyone beat this ?

Still the same menu for Valentines day with a horrific price (So we decided to spend that money in a good restaurant). It is like the managers think their clients are stupid, am really wondering !!!
When will the managers understand how to run a restaurant ??? The question : is the man in charge really comes from a restaurant background...
Nice location and decoration but for the rest...
We enjoy French food and for us Albert Roux has a good reputation so what is going on there ?
(Good point : nice and professional German/Asian waitress)

After one good lunch here, shortly after it opened, I have been subsequently disappointed.
On Monday two of us lunched. The maitre d' failed to bring my guest to my table - telling him that I hadn't arrived. Had I not spotted my guest we could have spent a long time waiting.
We both had the French Onion soup to start - the crouton was toasted rather than fried, so the whole bowl had become a soggy, porridgy, cheesy slop instead of a crunchy, cheese topped, satisfying winter soup. The soup itself was salty and uninspiring. Mains were really diappointing - a fillet of sea bass with the skin burnt black and a skate wing - apparently deep fried into an anonymous, flavourless and overcooked dish. The accompanying courgette "cake" was also overcooked - burnt and soggy, with no bite or flavour.
I will not be returning.

Visited early evening before a show and had the 'weekly' set menu. The boudain blanc with parsnip puree was excellent, celery soup was OK and surprisingly mushroomy. Pheasant was perfectly cooked with very flavoursome red cabbage. Salmon also good. Lemon tart was sublime! The combination of crisp, burnt caramel, oozing lemon filling and perfect pastry had me gesticulating embarassingly.
Complaints were not food related. We were given a bad table, squashed next to two other patrons, closer than we were to each other and right next to the till, despite a fairly empty restaurant. The atmosphere is stuffy, the waiters attentive.

I went back on Tuesday 21st November, 2006, with my brother, Scott, to take them up on their offer of a free meal.
We had a drink in the bar, and then a pre–dinner glass of Champagne at the table. With dinner we had a bottle of Sancerre. We both had huge bowls of the French onion soup which was excellent. Scott had the Dover sole and I had a steak. Both portions were large. Scott had the clafouti for dessert and I had a pineapple carpaccio. We accompanied the puddings with a glass of dessert wine each. Then we both had a double espresso which was very good. It was a lovely meal, with good service, and apart from some bad news during dinner I had a good time. The restaurant put a lot of effort into redeeming their previous failure and deserve credit for doing so.

I went for lunch with 2 friends, the decor was ok.
I almost fell of my chair when i've been presented the water menu...a water menu in a French restaurant sorry but i dont get it !!! A big marketing mistake obviously ....
The staff was not all the time attentive and a blond hostess was acting very nice but it seams to be soo fake !! We did not like the way she was acting as a 12 years old girl, i was expecting more professionalism from people hired in a French restaurant.
Let's say it was an average lunch. Disapointed then...
Will seriously need to be fixed.

What a disappointment, had eaten there when it first opened and really liked it, within the space of a few years has gone seriously downhill, no atmosphere, poor execution of what sounds like a nice menu, sloppy service, high prices for what it is. The wine was off had to be sent back, no real apologies from maitre d. Food sounded nice but it did not live up to any expectations. Would not go back

This restaurant charges £15 for any ‘no-show’s.
My review of the restaurant is somewhat mixed. We initially booked for half past seven. The restaurant asked us to move that to eight o’clock to avoid overlapping another booking they had. We obliged and changed the start time.
Althouth they have known for weeks in advance the size of our group, they split us over two tables but didn’t tell us that in advance of our arrival. My table placed our orders at five past eight, but our starters did not arrive until nine o’clock, by which time the other table had finished their main course.
At nine fifteen our table were served their main courses, except for Charles who had somehow been forgotten by the kitchen. All in all a very unsatisfactory situation as we were not able to mix and mingle with the people at the other table.
There were variuos complaints about portion sizes. In particular those who had the Sea Bream as a main course were not happy that they received a plate with a small portion of fish with some sauce but nothing else; no vegetables were included - NOT a balanced meal.
Also, the general view was that the staff were not friendly.
The manageress (Natahlie Esmuz) apologised - she left early - and in fairness it must be said that the bill was adjusted in response to our anger at the poor level of service. It is unacceptable that the kitchen chose to serve a number of room service orders in the hotel, before us, in spite of the fact that we had booked weeks in advance and had even rearranged our start time to make life easrier for the restaurant/kitchen.

I am afraid I have to agree with the more negative end of the review spectrum.
I went to Brasserie Roux for lunch last week with a colleague, and was sorely disappointed. The décor is OK, but the fact they have a 'water menu' (I kid you not) suggested pretentiousness rather than love of food.
With an eye on the desserts, we passed on the opportunity to have starters. We both had what was described as 'seabass with fennel en croûte' and tomato sauce, fully expecting half a fennel in some kind of pastry. Alas, no. It was the undercooked and oversalted seabass that came in chinese-style batter, on a tiny bed of sautéed fennel strips. If I had been in different company I would have sent the whole lot back, and called for a Gordon Ramsay-type intervention in the kitchen (and on the menu writer, who needs grammar lessons).
As for the dessert, the much-awaited chocolate truffle tart was too sweet and not flavoursome enough. I suppose its saving grace was that it contained neither alcohol nore gelatine.
Service was indifferent.
Would not recommend.
