I came here as it was the only place open on the 1st of January. The place was packed. What a great start to the new year.

The food was incredibly good. I lved the artichoke salad and am craving daily.

This will be my new special occasions restaurant.

I am looking forward to going back and trying some of the other dishes. I can't believe how long I've been missing out on.

The tuna and truffle roll also amazing.

Absolutely recommend it.

Well having read your reviews thought i'd give it a chance but I just went there for lunch. Place wasn't that busy and when we ordered were told it was going to take 25 minutes for the majority of items we choose. This wasn't the case as it took 45 minutes. Would have said that was ok if the food was good but it was very average. Service was deplorable.

So if you have no option but to try it give it a go but don't expect to come out saying it was a great meal. We asked how long it was open and they mentioned 8 years, which was a huge surprise to know it has lasted this long.

I took a very sceptical friend to Sumosan for dinner in an attempt to convince him that top notch Japanese food is alive and well outside of Park Lane. We were greeted by a very charming young lady and seated immediatly. The sushi we had to begin was extremely fresh but the excellent lobster salad recommended by our waiter was a big hit with my guest. The black cod challange was met with gusto ( es we know where it started) and my lamb dish pefectly cooked. The wine recommended by our sommelier was both good quality and reasonably priced. A very enjoyable meal with attentive but not intrusive service. I will once again be back and I have a sneaky feeling my guest will to!!

The food was very good, the sushi fresh, and the presentation top notch. I will not be coming back because of the service. It was atrocious. Our waitress was obviously hired for her looks, not for her customer care skills or command of the English language. We asked for cold sake and she asked the somelier to come up because she understood that we wanted "Cod sake." Throughout our meal, as we emptied our water glasses we needed to ask for them to be refilled. Plates were taken away, without clean plates being ready to be replaced. When the rude waitress did come by, she didn't have the appreciation of waiting a moment for us to acknowledge her, and rudely interrupted our conversation. Towards the end of our meal, most of us were finished and the staff started clearing our plates whilst while one person was still eating. Most of the finer rules of service were broken at Sumosan, which is a shame because the food was very good. However, at the end even the food disappointed, as my green tea ice cream dessert turned out to be disguisting. Even the cloak check person disappointed, as she forgot to give us one item that had been checked in.

Our meal here was not terrible overall, but from a price vs. value/service standpoint, it was awful. We paid £150 for two (that's $250 for Americans like us) and could have done much, much better elsewhere.

We were sent here by our hotel concierge. We waited 25 minutes to order cocktails (and we ordered our food then too, for fear it might take even longer the next time). Now, we saw and were sympathetic to the fact that our waiter was tied up at a neighboring table for much of that time (why that long? - who knows, language difficulties, perhaps?), but a well run restaurant would have sent over a manager or another server to us in that event. (And note that they charge an "optional" 15% service charge that is placed on the bill, so it's not even a tip vs. no tip service question.)

But the service didn't get better. I asked for recommendations for best dishes, and the server literally recited the menu descriptions to me, no more, no less. Not only did our cocktails run out, but we waited a good 10-15 minutes before any server came by to have us ask for another round. Again, not life threatening, but at this price point, I think you have every right to expect more than that.

The food was also disappointing. Not bad, but nowhere near sublime. Again, the price point. If you are competing with the best Japanese / sushi / fusion restaurants at the highest price levels, then you have to compete. Our dishes were pleasant but crude in terms of flavors, composition, and even execution (one of my nigiri pieces was so overloaded with wasabi that it brought overwelling tears to my eyes, twice, and I can tolerate the spicy stuff -- clearly a mistake, I believe, especially since my wife's nigiri was fine).

The restaurant space is pleasantly stylish, but nothing to write home about. The food is decent, but certainly not worth the bill. The service was friendly but regrettably deeply flawed. If that's worth £150 to you, then consider yourself warned. I'd either go somewhere cheaper, or sit outside Nobu and beg for a table.

My wife and I had dinner at Sumosan last night. The ambiance was very nice, the food hit and miss, and the service unspectacular.

We started off with yellowtail truffle tiradito, which was lovely. Strong truffle smell gave way to subtle flavors in the mouth, with very fresh and melt in your mouth fish. The rock shrimp tempura on the other hand was rather bland, even after dousing it in the sauce. The beef tataki was let down by the sauce. We had a mixed sashimi salad as the last started, and were once again impressed by the quality of the fish.

We decided to skip the mains, and just get some sushi and sashimi, which turned out to be a good decision. The fish was very fresh, the suzuki extremely tender and flavorful. The spicy tuna roll was the best I've had in London, and the spicy california roll was a very nice surprise as well.

I tried their sake flight, which had 3 small glasses of premium sake for a very reasonable £10.50

Its clear that Sumosan's fish is their strong point, but I wouldn't go back there. The difference in quality of food between Sumosan and the big boys, Zuma, Nobu is much larger than the difference in price. Better to shelve out another £20-£30 per person and go to one of those. Or if you don't want to spend extra, go to Tsunami instead.

I am really surprised by the positive reviews on this site. I went with a friend on Friday night and we were very disappointed. There was absolutely no atmosphere in the restaurant, which was also quite well lit and lacked any feeling of style. When our food arrived we were even more unimpressed - every dish was bland and lacked any great flavour. Below average food and over-inflated prices. We are great sushi fans and have enjoyed much much better meals at both the upper price end (Nobu, Zuma, Roka) and also the lower price end (at a few fantastic sushi places in Clapham). Do not waste your time and money at Sumosan, when there are so many better places in London.

On the upside, the service was good apart from the fact the waiter seemed totally disinterested when we told him that the meal was really disappointing.
