Been a regular here for about 6 months and i have seen a steady improvment in both the quality of food and service. I tend to avoid the weekends as it gets too busy for my liking but a sunny afternoon midweek is lovely.

Having been recommended to me previously, some friends and I dropped into the Waterway after a stroll along the canal on a lovely spring day. Indeed it’s a great location boasting a proud terrace along the canal. It’s just a shame that the service negates all potential merit this restaurant could receive. Amateurish is the only way I can describe the service. Consider: an abrupt ‘welcome’ by the restaurant manager, being led reluctantly to a table which we were told we had to vacate by 9pm, a waitress who could not explain dishes on the menu, two pepper mills (no salt) on the neighbouring table, a waiter who drops the lid off a screw-top bottle of wine and an incorrect bill snatched hastily away with no apology. It’s not impressive - I don’t care how good the food is.

Location and fancy décor alone does not a sophisticated restaurant make. Restaurants can’t compete in a city like London with service like that (and we shouldn’t let them). I did not pay the service charge given the disappointments above and recommend that you look for other restaurants in the lovely Maida Vale area.

Bon appétit.

I visited The Waterway last night and had such a fantastic evening, I can not wait to return again! The service was exceptional, our friendly Italian waiter took great care of us and gave us 5 star treatment, that sometimes you struggle to get even in 5 star establishments! The restauarant is just lovely, the food was absolutely perfect and very yummy, with no faults from the starter through to the most amazing chocolate truffle cake which was completely out of this world. We then moved from the restaurant through to the leather couch by the open fire to sip some fantastic cocktails!

You must go now! It's fantastic!

This is the place to be in London when the weather is good, the best drinks and BBQ's right on the side of the grand union canal in little Venice, Maida Vale.

But, I've just been for the first time when it’s freezing outside and GREAT GREAT GREAT. A roaring open fire, friendly staff serving glasses of warm mulled wine and we had a winter supper to die for. A great atmosphere and such a pretty place inside even when its dreary outside. SUPERB

Great winter menu with loads of cassoulets and comforting dishes. Service very good.

Lovely red wines (we had a bottle of Hamilton 'gumpers block' Shriaz - perfect for this time of year.

The Mulled wine needs a mention as it is about the best i have ever tried.

Lovely scene on outside terrace in winter with warming heaters and low lit candles.

High recommended.

I do not understand the last comment, clearly this person havent been there for a long time...

I was at the waterway last night for drinks with 3 american friends, after a few cocktails we all felt that we had to stay for dinner. It was definitly the right choice,

I started with a goat cheese tart which was lovelt then I had the Duck confit with cassoulet, the perfect dish for a cold winter's day but the prune creme brulee served flambeed at the table topped every expectations.

My friends where so impressed that they want me to take them there again today for bloody mary and roast dinner.

Overall an experience that makes you proud to leave in Maida Vale.

I agree with some of the comments posted here. The doormen act like the mafia. The oprations manager who purorts to have nbeen there for 5 years is snooty rude and unprofesional. The bar staff cannot speak English very well and get service and servtud confused an so the whole experience is truly disappointing. I used to be a regular there but have not set foot in the premises sinceMay this year. They've certainly lost my custom !!!

I was there yesterday for sunday roast, what a great place to spend lunch.

We had a fantastic bloody mary by the fire while reading the papers, we then went to enjoy a excellent roast followed by a warming rice pudding. The staff was very helpfull and the cooking of a high standard.

Will definitly go back.

Oh my goodness !!!

I scanned these reviews following a recent visit to see if my experience was the norm. Following the refurb The Waterway has traded on it's status as ideal brunch location. The management and service are deplorable and the food is well below average.
