Two of us ate the best sushi we have had in London there last night. It wasn't just good it was spectacular. Service was excellent, friendly, polite and helpful. Two of us ate for £65 including a bottle of slightly sweet but perfectly acceptable house white. Fantastic meal, highly recommend it. I hope the chefs got the £10 tip I left them.

Very child unfriendly restaurant although decent food. Previous regular but tried to turn us away saying that it is not suitable for my child and most recently happy to reserve me a table until they find out we are coming with a small child when they decide to give excuses why they can't. Totally unpleasant PR.

given the great reviews I was a bit surprised by the overal dinner experience. Service was very slow and one member of staff pointedly ignored us. The portions were very small ..much smaller than many other good quality Japanese restaurants I have been to which made us feel that we got pretty poor value. You can spend a great deal of money here and leave hungry

The food quality was good but i would not be quite as enthusiastic as other reviewers..

Ambience was lively..i would try again

Excellent sushi, definitely the best in the City. Get one of the omakase sets plus some sabazushi on the side. A little bit pricey but worth every penny. Plus the fact that it's on Leather Lane with all the hustle and bustle of the market going on around you makes it feel like you're eating at Tsukiji in a strange way.

I think this is, without doubt, the best japanese restaurant I have been to (outside of Tokyo) in London and I have been to tons of them. Sushi is my favourite food and Tajima Tei does it to an excellent standard. It's not a cheap restaurant and my partner and I can quite easily spend £70 for an experience that takes about half an hour, but the quality is so incredibly good that we don't mind. Zuma, Nobu and Cocoon don't come close, but then they are a completely different dining experience. Go to Tajima Tei if you want the best sushi in London but just don't dress up. You won't be disappointed. Oh, and the staff there have always been extremely polite and courteous. I can't imagine any of them being rude to anyone.

I still find Tajima-tei being by far the most reasonable Japanese restaurant in town. If I am to take Japanese senior VIPs straight away from Heathrow, I choose Yumi on George Street. You expect the required standard but you need pay accordingly. If I am to take my family for Sushi, my natural choice is Sushi Hiro in Ealing Common despite of a long journey. Occasionally I need to visit Jinkichi in Hampstead for Yakitori (only). There is unfortunately no Ramen place in London that can satisfy my standard. For other purposes, I give the highest overall points to Tajima-tei. It works very well both for commercial and private use – in terms of quality and variety of fresh raw fish, cleanness, volume and overall pricing. If you usually choose standard Japanese food from the English menu – e.g. Tempura, Karaage, Katsu, Teriyaki, Tofu etc, you will probably find these items OK and nothing special. They can use better ingredients and can serve you hot but you can’t really differentiate ordinary to special in a general restaurant setup (in Tokyo, it’s called “Izakaya” and very popular but they only go for drinks with chap food. You need to know specialised restaurants for particular dishes). But if you are more into the kind of food and know how to order food from the Japanese menu, you will find some of the dishes being distinctively tastier than other places. My choices there include: the selection of the most recommendable Sashimi of the day, Nikujaga-croquette and Matumae-zushi. Try for yourself!
