what the critics say

This Is London

Rowan Moore - 4/5

Wednesday, January 21, 2009 - A quarter-century later the Brasserie has revamped itself and the food is a delight, releasing delicate sequences of flavours in your mouth, little firework displays of taste. Extreme hotness is avoided, keeping your tastebuds alive. It is balanced and light, from the scallops with tomato chutney to masala sea bass and the cardamom kulfi. The monkfish is moist and firm. Prawns taste, as they rarely do, like beings that have come out of the sea. Soft-shell crabs are true to their name.

I ate dinner here with three friends. It was a good, relaxed experience for us. Entrance area has a colonial feel to it, good for drinks. Main part of the restaurant is clean and orderly. Not a very inspiring decoration but it was relaxing. Service and food was very good. We had a good evening here and left pleased and happy.

Bombay Brasserie used to be an excellent restaurant with great ambience, service, and food. Unfortunately, following a renovation and change in the menu all three have deteriorated. Where once there was a sense of occasion, the restaurant now feels like a run of the mill hotel eatery, with impersonal service, a cold atmosphere, and mediocre food. An unmemorable experience all in all.

On a practical note, flat plates may look interesting, but do not work with Indian food!

We had the weekend brunch here today (23/5/10)

The food was great, non greasy and flavourful.

The decor is very nice, we didn't get a good look around as the place was packed.

The staff are friendly and efficient, but i must admit they do lack a certain refinement as would be expected for a restaurant of this calibre.

Value for money is unbelievable, at £22 per head its worth every penny, others obviously felt the same as the whole place was packed.

Will happily return.

On Sunday we had possibly the worst and most expensive Indian buffet that it has ever been my misfortune to sample (leaving aside the vile rubbish served at my

prep school.)

The 'lamb' in the pasanda was tough, old and more grandfatherly than lamblike, and all the other buffet dishes were cold and swimming in ghee.

Facing the dessert was just too much of an ordeal and we left shocked and disappointed that we could have been charged £60 for two plates of this rubbish and a beer.

The only redeeming feature were the kind and considerate staff who doubtless were unsurprised at our swift departure.

Very, very happy, because the last experience we had at the BB was about 20-25 years ago and we thought it was terrible!!!!

We had their set lunch = £22. Very good value. We both went for the non-vegetarian option and extra spicy (we asked it for that way). Super tasty, succulent and very moreish especially the chicken and prawns. Not huge portions, thankfully, because there were about 7 different dishes. It was more than enough food (the lamb curry was melt in the mouth and still a bit pink in the middle - I don't know how they managed that). Yum, yum. yum, yum, yum. Quite expensive for the total bill (and had a glass of corked champagne) which was nearly £10.00 and the bill was about £65.00.

The only negative was the decoration, but we did not go there for the decoration. I think they were wrong to refurbish it, but that's my opinion.

But shall DEFINITELY be going again.

Took my wife there for her birthday, the service was very slow. It took us 2 hours to get our main course. Food was good, but the portions were too small.

On the plus side the starters were tasty and nicely presented.

Quiet expensive for what we ordered (rice / curry / 2 naan bread - main, kebabs for starters) = £80

After their so called major refurbishment, I was more than eager to try their food and the new look of this restaurant, after visiting them on a sunday brunch, I was convinced that changes are not always for good! I terribly missed the old look, the new look was just awful to say the least, the food was mediocre, nothing special the buffet is for sure gone down the quality, I missed the old style where the wonderful chefs used to make the Bombay street snacks in front of you, the bar just looks so out of place in the new setting, I missed the old waterfall and the lovely plants hanging down the trail. Oh! what a shame, it looks like a complete waste of resources to have invested in this fateful project. Please bring the old look, food and style back!!

FAMILIES DONT TRAVEL HERE!

1) Dont travel here with children there are no facilities for you!

2) Dont travel here for any birthday celebration!

3) Dont book a table here, we booked a table, only for our table to given away!

4) We ordered our meal - 2 of the drinks never arrived!

5. We had finished our meal and our baby started crying. What amazed us was the Indian manager (dressed in a suit) approached us and asked us to take the crying baby outside because it was disturbing guests. This was completely unnecessary and it spoiled our evening being made to feel like we should leave the restaurant immediately. We felt really bad.

6. The main course that arrived was not cooked properly.

7. Special needs were not catered for we were told to order a week in advance.

Our birthday celebration was spoiled and we all left the restaurant in an angry mood feeling insulted by the staff in particularly the manager. Avoid!!!

Excellent food, service & setting. The last time I went there it looked really tired and run down. Not any more. The food was well presented and in good time.

It maybe expensive but that was to be expected and the place was full on a rainy Tuesday evening. The only complaint I have is that the menu is not too extensive especially when it comes to lamb dishes. Will be going there again soon.

Having waited for the reopening of our favourite indian restaurant we were extremely disappointed.

The old colonial feel and look which had it's own attraction has been replaced by a modern hotel look. Although the original layout of the tables hasn't changed they are bigger and closer together and the waiters keep kicking your chair as they squeezed by and one dropped the food.

As for the food we were extremely disappointed that the old favourites have disappeared, the poppadoms and variety of chutneys and pickles have been replaced by some bland tasting, fancy shaped fried mini crackers and a tomato chutney which did not resemble anything indian.

The traditional indian dishes have been replaced with more bland tasting, mediocre dishes and I was extremely disappointed not to find their signature dish the crispy okra which they were so famous for.

The chichen curry was very bland and lacking any kind of flavour and very over priced. I disagree with the critic in that I think the old dishes had far more variety of subtle flavours in them.

I certainly miss the Thali which I used to go there for and thoroughly looked forward to!

In an attempt to compete with the other upmarket indian restaurants in London they have lost their charm.

Please bring back the Thali and crispy okra.
