Matthew Norman - 8/10

Saturday, October 14, 2006 - As readers of his autobiography, the startlingly well-written and drolly titled Humble Pie, will know, Gordon Ramsay hated his time in Paris under the aegis of fabled chef Joël Robuchon. "I was like a tortured child," he said a few years ago. "You know how arrogant the French are. Extraordinary." Extraordinary indeed.

The idea of eating at a restaurant that is smattered with Michelin stars is always an exciting prospect, but the reputation of Joel Rebuchon increases this 10 fold.

The inital impression is fresh and intimate. The colours (reds, black and green) really emphasis the oriental and spanish influences of this "workshop" style restaurant whilst the art style plunges us back to France.

Whilst seated at the dining bar, the atomosphere wasn't lost but to be honest the focus really was on the food. Le Flétan (panfried halibut) melted into the subtle smokiness of the bacon and silky mushrooms. It was put together just right.

As another success under Joel Rebuchon's belt, Olivier Limousin and his team achieved everything they set out to do. Fresh and revitalised dining with a true emphasis on the quality of food.

The kitsch - ness of having macaroons prepared in front of your eyes made me want to stand up, get behind the work space and try them.

Fantastic - a restaurant for the real foodie.

my french wife booked for our anniversary. food ok but nothing special, after that you need to eat a Kebab. the service was good, bill very high. no value for money. I don't see the point of going in a place like that if you can reach a MC donald that has the same atmosphere.

BEWARE! We had booked a table for dinner to celebrate our son's 21st birthday. The reservation had been confirmed over 6 weeks ago and we were really excited to be coming back again! We had drinks upstairs at 7.00 (15 altogether) and had booked a table for 4 for 9.00 p.m. At 8.45 the Manageress came upstairs and told us that there was going to be a long delay for our table because they were running late and couldn't give us the table until at least 9.30. We were offered the bar but we had specifically asked for a table. Eventually, the Manageress said she would see what she could do. At 9.02 p.m. we came downstairs to get our coats (having managed to get a table at The Wolseley restaurant instead) and she told me that she now had a table! It was too late and we left never to go back.

What a disgraceful way to treat customers!

My husband took me to this restaurant on Friday night for my birthday and I had a great time.

We sat at the bar which surprisingly still felt very intimate due to the low lighting and was great for watching the chefs in action.

The service was good and the food was excellent. If quantity is important for you in a meal then this is NOT the place to go but if, as it is for us, the quality is paramount then you will be in 7th heaven! Our starter was toasted bread with a morel, parmesan and tomato puree which was exquisite. I then had the steak as a main and it was cooked to perfection.

This is definitely a 'foodie's' restaurant and the atmoshphere is tres chic, tres suave. I would definitely go there again for a romantic dinner although it is very expensive so maybe just for a special occasion.

I have just booked for the fourth time. We love the food and the service. The pre-theatre menu is an absolute treat - and just the right amount. It is always of excellent quality and we feel good value.

The wine is not cheap but where is? There are quality wines to chose from and we have never felt let down.

Highly recommended.

i love great food; I don't even mind paying large sums of money for it.

However, After a £130 lunch (only 2 glasses of wine) and still feeling very hungry I can only say .... please do not go here if you have any sense of value for money.

The food, what there was of it, was very good - thee just was literally hardly anything on our plates. So very, very disappointed and breathtakingly bad value.

Such a disappointment.

I had the set lunch here about 6 months ago.

Quite nice but the portions seemed tiny to me. Starter was asparagus...two pencil thin stems, main was a lamb cutlet with mashed potato...I nearly burst out laughing when they gave it to me...two mouthfulls-gone!

Its a very snazzy place, a super-model looking french girl showed us in and all the staff seemed very nice and everything but if youre looking to leave a restaurant feeling full up without having to take out a second mortgage this probably isnt the place for you.

I had the set lunch lunch at GR Claridges and that seemed vastly better for about the same price

Whilst this review is probably influenced by how much I was enjoying the company of my dining companion, my meal at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon was quite simply the best I have ever had. I couldn't recommend it more.

Food lived up to expectation. Excellent hot and cold foie followed by fresh John Dory and superb duck. Quantities were quite adequate. Bread fresh.

Unfortunately the service would be most charitably described as chaotic.

My wife's champagne arrived promptly, my scotch didn't. Between the waitress and the maitre d, who kept appearing for no clear purpose, having spent 5-10mins on the menu, with two enquiries if we were ready to order, order given, still no scotch, but promised. Finally arrived shortly before appetiser.

Promised sommelier still hadn't (arrived I mean!). After again requesting somnelier he arrived short of breath (possibly he had to run being late for work).

His only comment was "Good choice) (fair enough). He was never to be seen again.

Entree arrived hot on the heels of the appetizer.

Wine glass depleted as was my wifes without refill until requested(waitress did apologise. Despite the delays in getting wine refills, first two courses through in 60minutes (too fast for my digestion).

I would not eat there again. I enjoy good food well presented but this was good food ill-presented.

Not Quite Nigella

Tuesday, September 16, 2008 - We’re headed to L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon today for lunch, thankfully a place that does not rely on a sunny outlook. If you’ve never heard of Joël Robuchon, he is the man who has the most Michelin stars in the world, beating even the female foodie’s pin-up boy Gordon Ramsay. The restaurant is all lacquered blacks and reds, sleek and shiny with some whimsical touches and chili and fruit displays. Everything is all about sleek surfaces and strategically placed lighting.

World Foodie Guide - 8/10

Tuesday, September 02, 2008 - L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon has been on and off my restaurant wishlist ever since it opened in London. However, after going to Taste London in June and sampling their crispy langoustine fritter with basil pistou and baby beef and foie gras burger with lightly caramelised bell peppers, I was finally persuaded to make the journey (a mere five minute walk from work).
