Daquise

Spruced up since the kitchen fire, the place still looks fairly stark, but functional and tolerably intimate. Just two vegetarian options, I went for the Polish Platter, a smattering of a few of the dishes on offer. Saurkraut, dumplings (think vegetarian Gyoza), potato etc. all very tasty and well prepared. My partner went for beef goulash with rice. Reportedly flat and dull to taste. Apple strudel was fine, some nice desserts on offer. Overall portions are a bit mean given the price and relatively humble ingredients. We've been meaning to try Daquise for years, it makes a change from the usual cuisine, the flavoured Vodkas are interesting and reasonably priced, but the atmosphere less than perky and the service more or less completely deadpan. An interesting experience but not one I will be rushing to repeat. We expected more considering how busy and well established Daquise is. Worth a try when you are bored of the usual favourites. Wodka off Kensington High St offers a better if pricier experience, but they smile sometimes and that helps a great deal.

Food was different but flavorful. Had lunch and the menu was very limited for the daily spacial. Atmosphere was a little crowded. The place could use an upgrade. Tables, chairs and china were very used.

This is a wonderful restaurant. Good, honest straightforward traditional Polish food well made and tasty, tasty. It has a great atmosphere; airy, high ceiling; and friendly staff. I want to be there now.

A few of us went there a couple of weeks ago. My wife and a friend treated themselves to the potato pancakes. More or less a rather tasteless dish. If you have a basic knowledge of cooking then just look up a recipe on the Net and I bet that your result will be tastier than the highly regarded Daquise chef's creation. Other members of the party had lamb chops (a bunch of grilled chops chucked on the plate). The chef must have felt particularly creative that evening as there was also a slice of cucumber on the plate. The golonka (pork knuckle) was ok, served with a couple of instant mash mini scoops (could they have run out of boiled potatoes?). I have had much better food at cheap restaurants in Poland. The restaurant appears to make up for lack of flare and imagination by giving the customer an extra large pile of bland and lazily prepared food. This place gives Polish food a bad name. We did not have any of their vodkas; perhaps if we did then my recollection of the evening's food would be rosier.

All in all great place, but what a shame the decor is so terribly tacky and out of date, feels like back home 1o years ago! Wanted to show my (British and sophisticated) date a typically Polish place but we almost ended up not coming in, so uninviting it looks... There is no music either and the lights are turned on full all evening. Luckily the food and service made up for everything and we were really happy in the end, and not only us since it was really busy for Wed night.

I've been going to Daquise on and (usually) off- living in the provinces the opportunities to visit aren't that often these days- since about 1963, when it was patronised by sad eyed Polish ex-soldiers who one imagined/hoped had probably given the Wehrmacht something to think about in the war. I suppose they are most of them reunited with their comrades and their horses in some part of the Elysian fields now. But Daquise remains, the food and the beer as good as ever. I hope the old boys approve.
If you go- you really should- raise a glass to them all!

Went to dinner there this week. Glad to see it's back and the food is just as good as ever. The decor is cleaned up, staff were pleasant, and it was incredibly busy for a Wednesday night. It's great that there are long term, good value places like this, not fly-by-night made-up restaurants. Enjoy
