clearly overrated. they only have 20% of the wines listed and the food is average at best. think management is not up to the task...

Genuinely sad and disappointing. Having dined at Papillon when it first opened several of years ago and then going again in February 2010, I was completely shocked at the degradation of service, food, and general experience. Staff are curt, food below average, and the timing of our dishes so severely off, you'd have to pay diners to even consider returning again. This is a solid example of a restaurant that no longer cares - it merely exists. ...also a great candidate for one of those turn-around-in-crises restaurant makeover shows! Do us all a favour and shut the doors permanently. It's a lovely space in Chelsea, currently going to waste.

We dined at Papillon on New Year's Eve. Without a doubt this was the best meal on New Year's Eve I've ever had. The service was attentive, the food delicious and the wine flowed. Filli Falt and her brilliant team looked after us in the most wonderful manner and I have to say my large group had the most wonderful time. I cannot recommend Papillon highly enough.

Very disappointing. Since it turned into a brassiere they hired unprofessional staff. Some of the waiters are very unprofessional.

Went for lunch Saturday. Took 20 minutes to order as they are completely unprepared. we were three people, had three starters and three main courses and a bottle of wine. Two main course were delivered wrong. The sole meunière was brought steamed. it was really unpleasant. and it was not eaten. The Grilled filet steak was brought with red wine sauce but the quality was OK

We politely complained to the waiter but no action was taken. The bill £160 still included all items without even the effort to offer the three espressos.

In the past 2 years i went to Papillion 20 times and yesterday was the last one as the decline path now has reached its limits.

I went to Papillon on a Saturday night with my girlfriend.

One dodgy thing that happened is with the wine. I ordered a nice bottle of Burgundy and the waiter brought it to me so that i check the etiquette. He then disappeared at the back for about 5-10 min, with the bottle. And then brought the bottle already open, and had me taste it. I am not a specialist so I will never know whether it was the Nuit St Georges 2006 i ordered. I am not usually paranoid but it seemed to me very unusual. In all restaurants i go to, the staff, sometimes the sommelier if you are lucky, open the bottle in front of you.

I called the manager about this and the answer was "this is the way we serve the wine here. He goes at the back to make sure the wine is fine. Also there is a lack of space". I found the answer unconvinving. The only way for my wine to be fine is that I know it comes out of the bottle I ordered. + how much space do you need to open a bottle of wine? The manager was apologetic about the wine service later on though. But offered no bill reduction, damned :) Long story short, I'd recommend you check your bottle is open in front of you if you go.

As far as the food is concerned, I found it good. I would recommed the rabbit with mustard sauce, the regional salads and the foie gras. My "medium rare" Entrecote was overcooked though. And yes it is not on the list but the chef should be able to take on the challenge to make you a "sauce au poivre" if you ask for it.

The ambiance was ok. a bit too slick for a romantic evening for my taste. Also the tables are very close to each other which makes you feel like being in a canteen sometimes.

I found the staff unexperienced in general and a bit slow. But hey, you need to take your time for romance.

I have a natural indulgence for French restaurants because i am French and I am always happy to see French cuisine grow and multiply in London, but i am not going to rate this one very well.
