Monday, February 23, 2009 - The plate appears a bit sparse when it arrives, plenty of porcelain visible around the big-bunned hefty burger. A few more of those attractive chips would cure that. The burger looks the business though, a demi brioche bun that has a soft texture but not so soft that it’s indistinguishable from the meat…The important thing is that it looks possible to get the whole thing in the mouth for the first bite, which I do and shortly after experience the cheerful sensation of warm juices running down both my forearms.

My first time at this hawksmoor (been to seven dials a couple of times). overall very disappointed.

sat in the back area of the restaurant. it was cramped and so noisy you could barely hear each other and had to scream

bone marrow starter very nice. 1kg bone in rib in rib was very ordinary. sides - mac cheese, very basic. chips ok.

serivce was friendly

compared to goodmans, this place is a pale comparison.

i cant see how this place gets the glowing reviews and dont get me started on 2 pounds for peppercorn sauce !

I have had a few steaks in my time and been to more than a few steakhouses in London and around the globe. I have to say that Hawksmoor was one of the bext experiences I have ever had. Brilliant amosphere, Excellent service and above all outstanding steask cooked to perfection. I know this sounds like such an advert, but hands down, you willnot be disappointed by the food!!

Wonderful quality meat as usual tonight celebrating my anniversary. Place was rammed with banker types and i was slightly concerned when we were seated next to bar which was noisy with a load of said financier looking bods congregating and obviously being quite loud. Luckily they dispersed and we were served our meal swiftly after a minor wait for our drinks order. I think it is beneficial to come here in larger numbers than a duo, in terms of value as well as the choice of meat you can order. Really wanted porterhouse but hubby and I are not big eaters nor are we particularly blessed fiscally.. So when waitress told us porterhouse was coming out at 1 to 1.5 kilos we knew it was not feasible. Went for a fillet and sirloin, med rare and they were superb. A couple of the sirloin slices were solid fat/ gristle but the surrounding meat made up for it. Meantime brewery lager is lovely... I wanna know which offy sells it! Lovely treat and have a doggy bag for a couple of sarnies tomorrow. All in cost us just north of 90 quid, obv reason why it's a rare occurrence for us but can't say I have had better steak elsewhere yet!

Had a fabulous evening at the Hawksmoor yesterday to celebrate two friend's anniversary. We couldn't have asked for better steaks...we came, we saw and we certainly conquered along with two bottles of wine! We started with some crab meat on toast, bone marrow with shallots and some fabulous rib. I shared the porterhouse steak with my friend - wow! Dont forget to have it with the macaroni and cheese and the triple friend fries!!

The service as well was excellent and friendly - sometimes quite rare to find in London.

All in all a great evening. Would definitely return pronto!!

Beautiful decor, great staff and of course, amazing steaks. we bought a huge chunk of meat to go round five of us. Felt obliged to get some chips on the side but by weight that must have been 5% of the food.

There is a blackboard on the wall which tells you exactly which steaks they have bought in that day, the staff are well versed in exactly what wine you need with your meal and someone has spent a fair bit of time and money on putting excellent decorations everywhere.

This being Shoredicth there's a whiff of pretension but that's surely the reason people come here right? Absolutely buzzing on a Saturday night which is always a pleasure.

Went last night with a number of people from work and whilst this is by no means a cheap place to eat the steak is absolutely stunning. Not sure what happened to poor Stephanie (review below) but she's either reviewing the wrong place or describing a seriously 'off night'.

I have eaten good steaks at many restaurants in London including Santa Maria del Sur and Goodmans but the chateaubriand I shared last night was the best I have ever tasted. I cannot wait to go back.

The Stonestreet Legacy which we enjoyed with the steak was also absolutely beautiful and one nicest red wines I can remember drinking.

I live around the corner from Hawksmoor, so its my 'local'. I go almost once a month and it's the best steak in London IMO. Good starters and desserts, but the main point are the steaks (various cuts priced per 100g) and sides (creamed spinach, macaroni and cheese!! etc). I've rolled out a couple of times after eating more than I have in my life.

Its pretty relaxed, nothing pretentious, so I can use my fingers and dress down. Normally during the week there are a fair few suits, but by the weekend there's no sign of the banker folk. It's not the cheapest, but well worth it.

After struggling to get a reservation in the restaurant for quite some time I plumped for an early 6pm sitting to see whether The Hawksmoor is all its cracked up to be. At 5.50pm the restaurant bar was already busy and had a good mix of people both city and hoxtonites together.

The char grilled squid starter which was served with fennel and orange was both original and extremely tasty with all ingredients complimenting one another perfectly. The lobster starter served with garlic butter was also a delight in itself. For the steaks we ordered from the blackboard the 800g Bone-in Prime Rib which was cooked medium, bursting with marbled fatty goodness. Sides of triple cooked chips, creamed spinach and asparagus were the perfect accompliments. Desserts of sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate brownie with ice cream topped of a thoroughly delightful meal.

Service was excellent at all times and i felt the attention one received from all staff was of an extremely high level. Something to note is that there is a definite benefit to arriving early in that the prime cuts of meat from the blackboard (which are allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis) sell out extremely quickly. By the time we left at 8.30pm all the select sharing cuts had been sold out to a happy and fulfilled dining room.

Get there early to avoid disappointment…its a real gem is The Hawksmoor.

Sorry but I have just been to the Hawksmoor and can't believe how bad the steaks are and the food overall. The Salmon starter was so thick and way too fishy and the Scallop was served with Champ. What kind of starter is that!! I am from Witney in Oxfordshire and the steaks are so much more tender and juicier. This restaurant is way too expensive for the poor quality of food. Steaks at that price should be aged at least for 21 days.

All these people giving excellent reviews of this restaurant have obviously not tasted good, quality fresh food.

The food was really delicious from start to finish, but its very very expensive for what it is. Over £70 a head for 2 courses - and I agree with other reviewers that the sides of chips, creamed spinach etc are meanly portioned. We've eaten in Michelin starred places where the food and service are much finer for less than this. I would not go again as a result unless someone else was paying!

An American In London

An American In London

Thursday, January 20, 2011 - With the lights dimmed and candles burning, the room is warm and inviting. The place is full but not loud, and Jon and I ordered the grilled bone marrow, which arrived silken and smoky with char. The bone marrow's accompaniment of sweet grilled shallots complemented the acrid char...Jon's medium-rare rib-eye was very tasty, so he tells me. Service at dinner was friendly and attentive. Tap water refills were fast and furious. Overall, I had a really nice experience at the Hawksmoor this time around.

Monday, March 08, 2010 - Sausage and Egg HkMuffin. Described on the menu as a 'guilty pleasure', this was quite simply one of the best things I've eaten so far this year. Incredibly playful take on the 'McMuffin', this went beyond my expectations. A beef, mutton and pork sausage (devised especially for the Hawksmoor) sits on top of two fried, free range eggs. A slice of Ogleshield cheese gently melted on top of the grilled meat completes the transformation. The sausage is a complete and utter joy, qualifying my idea that three animals minced together are better than just one; the eggs are fried competently, the cheese adds welcome creaminess.

Essex Eating

Sunday, December 06, 2009 - My burger is brought out and it certainly looks the part, thick and juicy with just the cheekiest hint of melted cheese oozing from under the bun. I take a bite, and it's incredibly good, the meat is extremely moist and tastes incredible like good meat should, full of flavour combined with the cheese, the thinly sliced red onion and pickles, the sweet soft bun. I'm literally dazed. I dunk a beautifully cooked chip in my Bearnaise and sigh happily, misty-eyed...
