Hadn't been there for years and the place is exactly how I remember it! Bob was still chatting to all the customers and making everyone feel like a long lost friend lol. The best pie & mash shop full stop!!!!!

Went here a couple of years ago and I was very disappointed. I had not had pie and mash for maybe 6/7 years and was literally salivating at the prospect of tasting it again. I ordered pie & mash with cooked eels and liqour. I could not finish the meal. The mash was even lumpier than I remember. The pie had an almost sour taste to it and the eels tasted extremely bland.

I had always wanted to introduce my child to this cuisine; but on this showing, no chance. I note that a lot of favourable reviews have been posted recently so I will give it another chance (It may have picked itself up since i last visited 2 years ago)

I sincerely hope it has improved and picked itself up. the food was as drab as its decor and all I felt was sadness

I was born within the sound of Bow Bells and am a tru Cockney. Although I have moved to Kent I travel to this Pie and Mash shop on a regular basis as it truely is the very best!

The owner always very helpful and polite, he calls me lady every time we talk and I love the atmosphere. Everyone always chats to each other- you never get that in any other place you go to eat.

I have introduced extended family to the traditional food and people come all the way from Buckinghamshire to get the best Pie and Mash around.

I would highly recommed this lovely pie and mash shop!

I was born in Stratford and my mother used to use either the pieand mash shop on west ham lane or cookes on stratford Broadway. I now live 150 miles from London but do go down about three times a year, we head for cookes pie and mash shop at Hackney fields on the Broadway.

It is our favourite meal. we really do have to forget any dieting as we always have two pies with liquor and a single portion of mash.

It has got to be the cheapest meal one can find in London, it annoys me when I see or hear of pie and mash shops being changed to Kebab places. We have lost the power of free speech we must not lose all our beloved pie and mash shops.

The staff at this lovely oldie restaurant are always very nice and polite to us, despite the fact that three times a year does not really make us regulars. We have been on the market days and find most of the stalls are selling foreign food, ie meat cakes etc, a slice of cake can cost you more than your pie and mash lunch.

I wonder what was sold on this market before the war way back in the 1930s, I doubt there was much foreign food there then.

A very satisifed 74 year old customer. Len

Without doubt, the best pie and mash shop in existence. Pray that it becomes trendy with the middle classes that have flocked to the area otherwise this and many other pie and mash shops in london will be nothing more than nostalgic memories. Make the effort and visit and enjoy while we still can.

Thursday, February 12, 2009 - There’s no better place to eat the traditional London working class food of pie, mash and stewed eels than F.Cooke in Hackney. My full monty on the plate. The green stuff to the uninitiated is the liquor (pronounced the Yankee way as in licker)- vivid green sauce made from eel stock and parsley. Of course I’m coming back, I’m a Londoner and this kind of tuck needs to be supported and preserved.
