Went last night, and found the food to be of a very good quality. It's not a Michelin star restaurant, and it doesn't try to be. I'm pretty sure the starters were cooked from frozen, whcih was a bit of a disapointment, but the rest of the dishes were really very good. Unfortunately i have no experience of Vietnamese food previously, but the food we ordered, which would not have looked out of place on a Chinese menu was far better than a lot of the Chinese I have had elsewhere in London, and at much more expensive restaurants. I'm sure if i knew enough about authentic Vietnamese cuisine, and had tried some, then thet too would have been superb. Likewise I can't judge it against other restaurants on Kingsland road, having not been to these, but i felt happy it delivered in its right...

To please a pho fan, I took him here and scored a success. Our entire party had some version of the 20+ phos on offer. The beef broth was fresh and fragrant, with a hint of star anise, and the condiments of fresh Vietnamese mint, bean sprouts and lime added sparkle to the taste. We also tried the banh xio -- a crisp eggy pancake filled with minced pork, shrimp and beansprouts. These are one way I measure a Vietnamese restaurant and by this measure, Song Que did quite well. On a Monday at 9PM had no trouble getting a table, and the service was friendly. I'd definitely go back.

I think the food at Song Que is great. I went there with my husband who is a vietnamese and his sister. The food was really authentic. We love the Goi Cuon and pho. They are quite good with their beef noodle soup, pho. We ordered a lot and tried almost everything. I can say, we were impressed. They used the type of purple mint which you can't really get anywhere and making the dish taste better. There was one thing that my husband like is the THREE COLOUR DRINK> it is on the dessert menu. You should give it a try, Don't leave it till the end of your meal as the coconut milk in it is very rich.
To those who complain so much about the service, at the end of the day it is a cafe not a michellin star restaurant. We just wanted to go there and fill our stomach.

Appaling food and terrrible service ! I waited 20 minutes for my order to arrive of which time my partner had finished consuming his . Give the lamb with satay sauce a miss . It taste nothing like satay and the only flavour you could discerned is saltiness. The meat is sinewy and truly you can't be sure you are chomping lamb or mutton . The waiters were surly and abrupt . Give this place a miss and don't be fooled by the favourable excerpts by Time Out pasted all over the shop as they are misleading .

All the reviewers below should stop being whiny babies. All those who visit the little hanoi area should only expect to get one thing: authentic vietnamese food at an affordable price! For all you quasi food lovers out there, why don't you go find yourself an overpriced and nicely decorated fusion restaurant instead elsewhere?
The food in Song Que is excellent, which is why there is always a long queue of people waiting outside. This also explains why waiters write down the expected departure time of the guests on the table. I think such treatment is only fair to those who are waiting to be seated. So again to all the whinies, stop looking for a wine and dine place where you can sit for 3+ hours and only pay £10, such a place does not exists!

Would echo some of the comments about the service of this restaurant. Waited patiently for a table and when got one the waiter would come by every 30secs to take our order. When we told him on the third occasion that we would like a few more minutes to decide he arrogantly wrote down a time on the table meaning that we had 30mins to order, eat, and leave!

Just had dinner there tonight.
We were waiting for the waiters to come up to us to take us to a table but they seemed to just ignore we were there.. I didn't care too much about service as I'd gotten a recommendation from a Vietnamese acquaintance who claimed the food was great.
The food was pretty average.. we had spring rolls for starters.. did not have the typical nice flavour I expected for Vietnamese spring rolls and too much deeply fried. We also had the soft shell crab starter which was ok and the beef salad which was well enjoyed by all. We also had bun noodles with grilled pork and spring rolls and our friends had beef and spring onions and the bream. The food was ok but I found my pork was overly grilled and dry and the stuff seemed to just lack flavour.. I've been craving for good flavoursome vietnamese food for quite a while and unfortunately this place was only average. Maybe we just chose the wrong plates but what we picked is not enough to make me want to go there again.

It used to be great here but their popularity has allowed rudeness to become part of the service. I arrived with my girlfriend and the waiter impolitely took our order. One of our dishes arrived but was not what we ordered and when we pointed this out we got the dirtiest look back! I was shocked. There's just no need for it.
The food now is so-so as standards have dropped the busier they get. Such a pity. Still, it made me go find a better vietnamese near Dalston a few stops down.
