The Brown Dog

The Brown Dog is definitely the best pub food I've ever had - and some of perhaps the best food I've had in London in quite a while. The staff were friendly, the beef was sublime and I'm still dreaming about the perfect chips and sticky toffee pudding. Cosy atmosphere without being pretentious. Am so happy we found this place!!!

i have just today (24/7/08) enjoyed a delicious lunch starting with sweet seared scallops , chorizo, prosciutto and salad leaves carefully fried, followed by a wonderful gloopy risotto with vibrant and fresh broad beans, peas and mint.the accompanying half of cornish(rock) guest ale, glass of sauvignon blanc and single espresso was the icing on a very fine cake.congratulations to the chef(s) and proprietors on their attention to detail on the plate , in the glass,in the ambience and the service.highly recommended. can't believe some of the earlier reviews unless their have been some recent changes for the better.

i had lunch at the brown dog a couple of months and found the food to be at least of a two rosette standard. Barnes is very lucky in that it has two great english pubs serving good, honest traditional food. the treehouse and the brown dog are both steering away from the gastro pub idea and producing honest grub. the reason for high prices should be obvious. Good ingredients, competant staff and careful preperation does not come cheap. The majority of restaurants and pub work on a 75% profit on each dish. Bear this in mind when you are wondering why a steak is so expensive in one place compared to another. If you want a rubbery steak rasied in botswana, killed in nigeria and butchered in an east end kebab shop chucked on a dirty grill by a couple of passing ablanian dish washers then by all means fill your boots at the idle hour. I can imagine that the brown dog is having some problems at the moment but thats no reason to shoot the place down,. the boys obviously care about food. Other places in barnes where i know the quality of the produce and care involved in its preperation are far inferior are annies and ma cuisene. The prices reflect this and you do get what you pay for. So something for everyone..good luck

Obnoxious staff, terrible food and exhorbitant prices. Why this place is always so busy is beyond me - it is thoroughly undeserved.

How this establishment can describe itself as a gastro pub is beyond me. Food lacking in judgement, care and any finesse whatsoever shows this mediocre establishment that it's about time it pulls it's socks up!

My partner and I live round the corner from the Brown Dog and although we have popped in for a drink a few times, until recently we had never tried the food, having been put off the extortionate prices. However, having read that it had been nominated for the Time Out Gastropub award we thought we would stretch our wallets and give it a go. Unfortunately the food did not live up to expectations. Starters of potted shrimps and beef carpacchio were good but unfortunately things went down hill from there. My partner ordered tuna as a main course and the waitress made a specific point of saying that it would be served pink in the middle. Sadly the limp piece of fish that arrived had been seriously overcooked and I regret now that we did not send it back to the kitchen - something I have only done once in a restaurant. My lobster pasta was not much better, tasting of cream and little else. A decidely average sticky toffee pudding completed the meal. It is a shame that a nice pub like the Brown Dog feels the need to go down the "gastro" route, pretty much copying every other pub in Barnes. What's wrong with reasonably priced proper pub food? I think I will stick with the Idle Hour.
