Friday, March 05, 2010 - Particularly delectable is the soft-shell crab spring roll. The crab has a wonderfully soft yet crunchy texture. Also impressive is the spicy tuna wasabi rolls with wasabi leaf, a spicier alternative to the more typical wasabi powder. The biggest surprise of all is the very traditional duck breast 'Hoba-yaki' with sweet miso and a faint scent of sandalwood, served on a magnolia leaf. The duck is incredibly smoky, almost bacon-esque, a taste that's expertly balanced by the sweetness of miso.

Saturday, April 11, 2009 - The chef here, Tomonari Chiba, is an ex-Nobu man and there’s a lot of “new-style” sashimi (the flesh essentially escabeched) done very well. But I went pretty traditional on the raw fish and was rewarded with chu-toro and o-toro as good as I’ve had in London, on perfectly made sushi rice. I had good tempura, great seaweed salad, and a neat little bowl of lobster miso soup from the blackboard…Funny name, unexpected location, slightly unsettling space, and very possibly the most interesting food in England. Go on, choose your priorities.

A small restaurant tucked away in the middle of nowhere. The food was good, but not the best Japanese I have had in London. Given the cost I was expecting something pretty good, but the whole experience let me down. The Food was good, but no worth the money. The service was terrible (culminating in them getting our wine mixed up with someone elses). The Ambience was non-existent. There are better Japanese restaurants out there for less money.

Will Eat For Money
Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - Many people shirk when you mention that you like eel, but they tend to have jellied efforts in mind. Grilled and topped with a sweet sauce (Kabayaki sauce), the version at Dinings is probably the best I've tried in London. With a firm bite, not dissimilar to canned sardines but with a sweetness drawn from the sauce and a smokiness from the grilling, it's a joy to eat... Dinings is a great restaurant which serves fantastic sashimi and the lunch menu is worth investigating. Booking is advisable.

Wednesday, September 02, 2009 - Seared wagyu beef sushi with truffle salsa & ponzu jelly more than made up for the slightly disappointing offerings above. Each piece is elaborately arranged and has to be eaten whole in order to fully appreciate the different flavours - I love ponzu jelly!...I didn't really appreciate the Dinings version of modern Japanese food. The outstanding and memorable dishes were clearly the wagyu beef sushi, wagyu beef tataki and the puddings, while the other dishes were a little hit-and-miss and not particularly noteworthy. In terms of modern Japanese, I still prefer Roka's style.

Monday, May 11, 2009 - Unrestrained and free from pretension; Dinings is a mellow and comfortable restaurant where one can sample some ethereal Japanese fusion. Its not glamorous, nor is it cheap, there are some dishes which appear underwhelming and in comparison to some of the luminaries in Green Park – cooking is not as clinical. But what you get instead, is lovingly cooked food, a subtle rainbow of flavours and sushi that just tastes great. Folks, this restaurant is a little special and if you’ve never tried euro-japanese food before, then I suggest you try the epitome that is Dinings.
