Geales (Notting Hill)

We found this charming restaurant by chance after going to see a film at the Gate cinema. It was just what we wanted, excellent fish and chips and a great steak for the non fishy friend with us. The wine was good and reasonably priced, can highly recommend it.

We eat at Geales last night and had a fantastic time, it was such a lovely evening we all sat outside in Farmer street which has all the houses painted different colours. The service was friendly and the food was great, the batter on the fish was particularly good, would definitely come back.

We went Wednesday 20th July 2011. What a huge disappointment, we normally go to Bibendums for oysters, but we thought we would try somewhere different. Wish we hadn’t bothered. The staff were badly trained, indifferent and not in the least concerned that we were not having a good eating experience in the restaurant. It is not a large menu, but when there are no Prawns, no Sole and no Fillets steaks!. After the scruffy maitre’d came back for the third time to tell us that our third choice of sole was not available, he added “have the Haddock, it all tastes the same anyway”. Yes we wanted to leave at that point, but it was raining like you would not believe and we had already had a glass of wine. So would have had to get a cab, impossible in the tropical rain. Going to Bibendums Friday 22nd July 2011 to cleanse us of the experience of (yuk) Geales.

I like Geales particularly when I can sit outside and watch the world go by .it is not actually on Notting Hill gate but you can see it

As for the food ,the fish is very good particularly the sea food platter which is lots of lobster, prawns , mussels etc and is usually too much for old me Also the weekly specials of fish and chips are very reasonable

Although the wine list has a wide range of prices there is good value at the lower end

I have always found the service very competent timely and friendly

It is also next to the Tube so I don't have to drive

NEVER AGAIN. One of my worst dining experiences for a long time.

No atmosphere, rude and inexperienced staff, repetitive and boring menu, overpriced, how did Time Out give this a mention as a top restaurant in London!

I will never set foot inside this place, ever again.
