Dark Horse

I like the Dark Horse. The food is of a high standard and taps into the zeitgeisty modern British style - great pork belly for instance. I'd definitely recommend a visit for a good value, tasty meal. That said, I have to add two provisos here. The first is that what the Dark Horse is doing, The Bear (only five minutes away) is doing better, although it does cost more. The second is that it's a large space inside (albeit a nice one), that never even seems remotely full whenever I've been, which means that it's lacking a little atmosphere.
Overall though, a regular dining place of mine, and the food over many visits has been consistently 4/5.

I eat here quite often, because the food is great value for money - there are various special deals, but even when it's full price, it's worth it (about £20-25 per head ifor 2 courses ncludng wine). There's inspired use of seasonal ingredients, in starters and mains, and the desserts are great too, especially the warm chocolate brownie. Service is friendly, and fairly fast, and they allow well-behaved dogs at the tables outside. Grove Lane is quiet enough that sitting outside is pleasant, yet it's only a minute's walk from the main street. This is a difficult site for a restaurant (previous ones have failed) but this one deserves to succeed. Friends introduced me, I now eat there, and friends I've taken now go in preference to other local gastro-pubs.

I went here for lunch recently, and was quite shocked by the service, it was hurried and incredibly blasé. The diet Coke's we ordered were flat, and when we asked to have them changed, were told thats how it was meant to be.
The menu had a good, and varied selection, but the prices seemed a little muddled. The beefburger was nearly twice the price of a steak sandwich yet seemed lacklustre in comparison.
The taste and flavour of the food was good, but could have been infinately better. My steak was very chewy, and was positioned badly within the ciabatta rendering half of it empty.
This restaurant seems a step in the right direction for Camberwell and south London, but still has that common 'why bother' feel to it. There are more and more inhabitants of this area that are willing to eat out locally, if only the restauranteurs would provide the right standard that can be found elsewhere in london for the same price.
