I’ve just had the worst restaurant experience in my entire life! I have been to Alisan three times before and the food and service was fine. This time my husband, my 2.5 year old and I didn’t even get a chance to order the food. A waiter came to take our order. I asked what ‘Young Chow’ rice was. ‘Mixed meat’, he said rather abruptly and got very annoyed when I asked which meats exactly. Turns out there was seafood too which my husband is allergic to! He finally took our order and I asked for jasmine tea to drink. My husband was about to ask for his drink but the guys grabbed the menus and rushed off. When I said ‘Excuse me, could you please get my husband a drink’, he got very annoyed and told me that he would come back for that. Seeing the shock in my facial expression, he came back, slammed the menus back on the table and asked looking at me ‘Yes, what do you want to drink then?’, like he was doing us the biggest favour ever! At this point, my husband said he wanted to leave. I asked whether I could speak to someone else but the waiter kept smiling and saying ‘Sorry, you feel this way’. He didn’t look sorry at all and wouldn’t call anyone else. I then said we were ready to go and the guy started moving the high chair with my daughter in it! Totally bizarre! I went to the counter at the entrance and asked to speak to the manager. The gentleman there said ‘No, he is the manager’ (smiling) and then both of them escorted us out!!!

Oh my God! I am still in shock. I feel utterly humiliated. There is something definitely wrong with this guy as there is no possible explanation or justification for his behaviour.

Their chef might be good but the attitude and conduct of their front staff is disgraceful. They don't deserve their customers

Went in for dim-sum at lunchtime. Huge dim-sum menu - really varied - they take it pretty seriously. Everything we tried was decent although pumpkin and yam was a little stodgy. The service was decent and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's my new favourite dim-sum joint. Bit of a pain to get to but it does afford a new view of the stadium.

Third rate Alisan! Three friends from Coventry celebrating a 60th birthday and trip to the fabulous Cirque du Soleil show chose the Alisan for its Dim Sum menu, gluten free choices on the (online) menu and also its nearness to the Arena. We were shocked on arrival to find ONLY set meals C and D were available. Nothing else! Choice C was lukewarm and overloaded with msg salt. The chicken platter was slapped down 10 minutes later. Not wishing to upset my friends I paid the £77 for the poorest meal in a long time. The Wing Wah in Coventry is far superior! I reckon the online praise reviews are written by restaurant staff as there are no negative ones!! 1 star only.

Organised an evening at Alisan with a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. Despite more people turning up, staff accommodated us warmly and quickly.

The decor and ambience were great (there's an option to hire out the Karaoke suite if brave enough) and was well suited to a large group of friends but, at the same time, seemed great for a romantic evening or even a family meal, minus the kids.

Service was very good, without being amazing. Sometimes a little slow to offer more wine but that is subjective and I guess depends on the type of people present. That weak point is my only real criticism. I only mention it here because the restaurant was not that busy on the evening in question.

The food could not be faulted at all. We over ordered and gladly over ate! The portions were of a good size which I've found to be rare the more upmarket you go with Chinese cuisine. There was a decent time gap between starters and main course to keep the conversation flowing. Most importantly for me was the complete lack of oil and grease on the food and plates - something I've come accustomed to in lesser places. Cannot recommend it enough.

Yes, we will be going back!

Tamarind and Thyme

Tamarind and Thyme

Thursday, April 22, 2010 - Alisan seem to excel in the art of the fish/seafood paste - I really enjoyed the squid cakes and the surprisingly pretty taro prawn cakes. Of the classics, their har gau and siu mai were just average while the wu kok (taro croquettes) and sticky rice in lotus leaf were very good. Their turnip cake was fried with a bit of egg and Chinese chives and was superb with a very tender, creamy middle. Desserts were all excellent: the mango pudding served with chocolate chips (!), the egg tarts hot out of the oven and the mango/grapefruit/tapioca 'soup' very light and refreshing and my favourite.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 7/10

Tuesday, April 13, 2010 - The restaurant is spacious and airy with lots of natural light. But with Wembley stadium in view, it's hardly the most glamorous location. But it's the food that counts, and we started with a perennial favourite, har gau (prawn dumplings). The prawn filling was wonderfully crunchy and tasty and possessed a strong aroma of sesame oil. Chicken feet in chilli black bean sauce yielded an authentic sauce that was thick with black bean flavour. However, the chicken feet, whilst tender, could have done with more cooking time for a more melt-in-your-mouth texture. The prawns in the prawn cheong fun were also wonderfully crunchy and tasty, with the cheong fun being light, smooth and very authentic.
