I went Joe Allens on 19/8/10 and I wont be going again. This was my second visit as i went a couple of years ago and it was poor then as well, however i had hoped that the first time round was just an off night - it wasn't !!. Although the service and ambiance were pretty good the standard of the food was terrible. I had onion soup that had a ton of pepper in it and was almost inedible and i also had meatloaf with mash that was reminiscent of a school dinner. I would love to know how it got so famous - maybe they have a special chef for well known personalities? Anyway don't bother.

Ambience was nice, the burger was one of the best I've had. However the staff were indifferent and the price for some items was shocking. I'm afraid that in my opinion nobody can genuinely believe it is acceptable to charge £4 for a side plate of chips and £4 for a bottle of cider. I know some people will shout London prices but I'm not willing to be seen off anywhere. The sad thing is that because of these points I won't be returning soon

Joe Allen's has lost it's way. Food is terrible and service indifferent. This from someone who has been eating there for 25 years

A good place to go for a pre-theatre meal. You feel as if you're in New York. Food was nice although pricey for what it was but the ambience is nice. However, some of the staff were incredibly impolite. The woman who greeted us at the door was surly, rude and couldn't have been more disinterested. A smile goes a long way but some of them couldn't have given two hoots which rather spoilt things.

I can understand why people love Joe Allen for the great atmosphere but the food is truly terrible. The steaks were so tough and chewy they were inedible. We got free desserts to make up for it - a cold slab of bought in tart and some kind of supermarket own brand ice cream. Awful. I have given it the benefit of the doubt and this was a return trip - the first being equally as bad. Good atmosphere doesn't make up for this poor quality of food.

I have been going to Joe Allens for at least the last 25 Years and as a family we love it to bits. We have visited it for every important family celebration and the staff are absolutely SUPER especially the Maitre d's who have been there ages too - it is the greatest and I could not recommend it more highly. So big hugs to Kathy, Rachel Emma and all the team. Oh, just a PS the food is great too and the cocktails yummy and brunch a 'must do' on Sundays.

I have eaten here before about a year ago and i was very happy with the quality of the food, although the menu choice is limited and the staff weren't very friendly. It is in a handy location, being in Covent Garden but i would only recommend this restaurant as a quick place to get something to eat, not as a planned meal for an occasion.
I have always had the ribs with the savoury muffin and enjoyed it, but never experienced anything else.
A 6/10 nothing special but not a complete nightmare like some reviewers have chosen to describe it has. Some peoples expectations are always a bit too high.

I visited Joe Allens on Saturday the 7th Feb after seeing La Cage Aux Folles (Excellent highly recommend) for after theatre dinner. I had been before but not for a number of years. While the restaurant retains its ambience and the service is not bad the food was awful. We ordered a goats cheese salad the best of the meal a simple steak which was as tough as shoe leather and an absolutely tasteless New York cheesecake a bottle of red wine, for which we had to ask twice and were onto our mains before arriving. The place obviously relies on its old reputation which is a shame because it has such potential but then again at £45 per head what do they care if you never come back, I certainly wo'nt.
